Help! 14BFF won't stop leaking

I have way worse spindles than that on mine and the new style seal sealed no problem. Agree to clean it up a little smear on the rtv and call it good. I fill mine to the fill hole and send it. Only hubs I've ever added oil to were big truck hubs.

Guys, I'm at wits end. Did the RTV thing and still leaking. Do I get another fancy seal and try again, or go back to old style seal with speedi-sleeve? Or is there some other thing I could just be doing wrong with the install or something? Super annoying.

Don’t throw in the towel until you’ve exhausted all known quality fixes - try the Speedy-Sleeve and original style seal.
This method has worked for years on damaged seal surfaces.
The super cool and effective two piece seal would be preferred but may not be an option for you at this point.

Follow the sleeve instructions to the “T” and ensure that when you install the hub seal that it is absolutely flat ( as in use a proper seal/cup driver ) so that the rubber lip will be in even contact all 360* of its assigned territory - don’t forget to dab a little grease on the seal lip surface to keep from burning it up.

Could cut bait, grab another 14b.

youre sure the hub is properly seated on the spindle?

Curious - have you tried swapping wheel hubs to the other side and seeing if that same hub leaks when on other side and if the other hub leaks on this side?

Good idea on the swap. This 14b has 456 and a Detroit, so I'm not ready to give up.

Is it possible that the leak could be from where the seal fits to the hub, like the metal to metal part where it is press fit in?

Had to tear the seal in two to get the hub off. I don't think there's any way the leak is coming from between the seal and the spindle. Couldn't see any evidence of oil there either. I think it must be leaking around the outside of the seal. It's apparent where people have been mutilating the hub over the years to get the seals out. I guess my next play is to put some RTV on the outer seal surface before putting it in the hub, though I don't look forward to trying to remove the seal after that.

Yea that could be the culprit. Butchered. I’d source a used hub in better condition.

If you wanted to confirm it is in fact the hub, swap sides like i mentioned above. If it leaks on the otherside, then its confirmed its the hub and nothing related to the spindle/housing piece of equation

The thing the occurred to me about swapping sides it that I may well end up with another ruined set of brake shoes depending how the experiment goes. And with the RTV on the spindle, every brake job requires a new seal to be installed since the seals have to be destroyed to get the hub off. For now I'm trying the RTV on the outside of the seal. Hopefully it'll just work and I can forget about this. I'll live with oily shoes on one side.
