help 6.5 injection pump module.........

A buddy has a '94 k2500 6.5 with auto. hes been having engine shutdown issues and preblems restarting hot. the pump driver.....PMD? is it called.has been relocated 2 years ago when it was replaced before to the driverside inner fender.


I have a snapon scanner I'm going to go ever and scan the codes and such. now anyone have a link to a GOOD relocation article. maybe something was not done right or could be better. thanks
 
went and checked it out. no codes. run it for a while its 28celcius out. the PMD gets smoking hot. its on a small bracket. under the driverside hood hinge on inner fender basically.


what more can you do to save it? why did the PMD over heat again? its far hotter than anyhting in the close vincinity of it.
 
Only one I've seen in person was relocated to behind front bumper/grill area where it sees no underhood heat and gets max cool airflow.

When I had my 95 chevy diesel I tried the relocation kits etc. What I found is that they all crapped out quicker after I removed them from the side of the injection pump. I tried the early "FSD Cooler" mounted to the intake manifold and then relocated to the front bumper. The only thing that removing it from the pump accomplished was it was a 10 minute job to change it out instead of an hour. Stanadyne engineers designed the PMD to be cooled by a heat exchanger that is constantly being cooled by cool fluid (Diesel fuel flowing through the injection pump). For an air to air cooler to be as effective as a fluid exhange cooler it needs to large enough to dissapate and receive enough air flow to dissapate the heat as quickly as a fluid cooler would. None of the kits address low speed driving (City) nor do they allow for good airflow (Think aerodynamics of the vehicle. Under the bumper unless directly in front of the a/c condensor is going to be a dead space. and at anything under highway speeds is going to see negligble airflow. Untill someone creates a system (Think running the fuel line through an aluminum block and mounting the cooler to it) he will continue to have the same problem at one point or another. I would by one of the aftermarket guaranteed for life ones that some of the manufacturers sell so when it does crap out again (It will eventually) he isnt out any more money.
 
I know my post above sounds somewhat cynical but over the 8 years that I owned my 1995 It had 4 injection pumps and countless PMD's. Knowing what I know now I would have changed it over to a mechanical setup (Not to hard on 94-95's) and been done with it. I would probably still be driving it. Factory PMD's were around 300.00 last I checked. You could get a good rebuilt mechanical pump for a little more coin and then get a custom chip to delete the trouble codes, change over to mechanical throttle linkage and he would be good to go.
 
we did surmise that the problem was no heat sink at all. its just bolted down to a bracket thats bolted to the inner fender.


cruising options right now. I told him remote fuel cooled was where its at but well see if he builds one, hes a millwright so hes got the skills to make something. or just buys a big air cooled one. I'm not sure. whatever is cost effective i guess. a block of aluminum is probably a few bucks right off the bat.
 
If it was bolted to the pass side fender, it would not be a big deal to route the fuel line through the cooler.
