Alright I will skip the whole "I'm new to TBI", that's a given :doah: :D

After our last wheeling trip I'm done with the carb, I'm finally getting close to having the truck set up how I want it and right now the carb is my biggest limiting factor.
The rig in question is my 1986 K30, stock 454 with th400 behind it, most of the EGR stuff is gone along with the factory dual smog pumps but other then a set of mufflers it's completely stock.

Now for my questions, I've found a guy locally selling a 89 454 TBI unit, intake, dist, and sensors from a running engine for $150 ......... Good deal ?

Next...I need an ECM...will one from a small block work ? The local yards are full of SBC TBI rigs but BBC's are few and far between.

How about the distributors, is it the same as non EFI stuff where big and small blocks are the same ?

Is it worth it to buy a harness or try to pull one from a wreck and mod it (the wreck most likely being a small block rig) ? Any recommendations on who or where to buy one from if that's the logical route.

Other then a set of headers right now im not looking to do any real mods to the engine, maybe over the winter I may do a head swap (781's and a mild cam) but that would really be about it. I'm not trying to be a complete cheap a**, but at the same time any money saved can go towards other items on the want/need list.

Any help is greatly appreciated

The TBI unit is the hardest and most costly part when doing a BB or needing the bigger injectors. The TBI unit used to sell for $200 alone, nowadays sometimes $100...

As long as it is an 1989! Somewhere around 93? They went to smaller injectors and WAY more fuel pressure.. not desirable injectors. Same as a 4.3L

It would be easier to use an adapter then the complete intake. Some old intakes are just an adapter.

Yes the SB ECM is the same, the chip is differant. You'll need a custom one anyway for things deleted like EGR etc...

Yes the distributor is the same.

Yes it's worth rewiring a pulled harness or spend the $350 for a new one.

Knock sensor and ESC are different SB to BB, some BB don't even have knock. The only other parts that are different are TBI unit and chip...

HTH!

Sweet :waytogo:  thank you !!

That gets me moving forward, I have some stuff I had accumulated for a swap on a SBC that never happened (ECM, stock harness, dist, TBI unit and some sensors) so I really just need the 454 TB, a fuel pump, and either an intake or an adapter then.

I used my small block harness and computer with only minor changes to the harness and a chip change to get my 88 model Burb going from 350 to 454. I have an intake adapter if you need one and might have an extra throttle body, give me a holler.
