does any one know if an extended torsion bar kit exists for the late 90s IFS trucks ????

I need one asap........:doah:

Extended torsion bars...huh? Used to be pretty versed in those trucks but have never heard of an extended torsion bar.

OK, what I mean is. remove stock torsion bars, move crossmember back x" install longer torsion bars.

Don't think that's ever been available. There's higher rate bars usually but those are just thicker bars of the same length.

I could be wrong but if there are longer bars for these trucks I've never heard of it.

I tend to believe you.........its not something I've ever heard of either.

well you heard it here 1st folks. I'm making longer torsion bars then. I need to gain 8" infront of my torsion bar crossmember. to fit my transfercase :doah:

necessity.... the mother of all invention.

for a pick up, or a blazer/tahoe? i know 99 plus tahoe/suburban, has a short t bar, but silverado, gmc has a longer ones. sorry i cant be much of a help.

yup......I have 2 tansmissions and 3 transfercases and I can't get any 1 of them to fit in front of the t-bar crossmember. :doah:SAS is a long term thought. and it won't be a D60 deal......thats just not good enough. ;) It would have to be bigger diffs than that. I have a line on a D110 but no front for it. so maybe down the line.

OK next question then.........

What size hex is the torsion bar on each end? I know i can eventually go to the truck and takeone out and measure. but does anyone know off hand. so i can start to source steel

i just searched the other forums but no luck there. sorry.. wish u best of luck!

Interesting, never seen anybody try to fabricate their own torsion bars. Have you looked at other OEM applications to see what may be available? I don't know the material properties of the typical torsion bar right off hand, but it's likely you can't just go to the steel store and buy some hex stock and slap it in.

And of course I have to ask........what type of transmission and t-case are you trying to make fit? Some big truck components?

Sure I can. but you don't use actual hex stock. I need a 4140 or 4340 HTSR or annealed round bar. I machine the hex into the ends. and run it down the lathe a few times to get my desired spring rate (thickness) it will have to be proportionally higher due to the increased length just to retain the equivalent stock spring rate.

transmission and transfercase are from the '95 Dodge donor. 47RH and 241. just not much you can do when your bellhousing is set back 10" from stock location.
