hey fairly new to the forum but been reading for a while i have a few question hopefully i can get answerd, i've got a 77 k5 with dana front and 12blt rear and 3.08s, 350,th350 and 203. so far i've redid the top end with rebuilt heads and alum intake, (truck came with a cracked head and a warped one). i'm currently swaping to a 81 front end, from my parts truck thats torn down.
I plan on swaping out the dana with the 3/4ton out of the parts truck. (10bolt with 8 lug outers and 4.10's). swapping the 205 into at a later date. and putting the 14sf in the back(limited slip) at the same time. and possible later on putting the 4speed into the truck too.
no my questions,
I plan on mostly playing in the mud, on some trails and snow. there is not a lot of rock around here. but i also drive it on the street and there will be highway.

1. i orginally planed on running 35/12.5 bfg mud terrains or swamper tsl's but i came accross a set of 38.5/11 boggers for decent price, will this be too much for my gears or axles?

2. ive seen add's that say lifts from 73-76 and 77-88 is there a difference? cause i found a good deal on a 4" thats barly been used (4"springs and add-a-leaf and block) that was on a 75.

3. will i need a raised steering arm or dropped draglink with only a 4" lift?

thanks guys.

1. 38's on 10-bolt or 14sf is asking for trouble. I'd stick with 35's and a 14b full-floater. 4.10:1's is okay but you'd prolly want 4.56:1 or 4.88:1, especially for those 38's.

2. Not aware of any difference in the 70's. Blocks suck though, think shackle flip.

3. Raised steering arm, yes. Dropped draglinks are a PITA.

4.10's would be tolerable with the 4 speed manual, not so much with an auto. The 38.5's could easily kill the Dana 44 or 10 bolt front without much trouble...however if you kept it 'open' and were sticking to mud only it could last for a while. I'd definitely practice replacing stubs and shafts in my driveway, plus get a small box with every tool for the job and keep it in the truck. Spares shafts, stubs and U-joints should be kept on hand too.

The 14 SF should be OK with those tires, but again it's on the edge of what it'll take...

4" lift is same/same for '73 right to '91 for K5's, 'Burbs, etc etc.

k thanks for the info, i stick with the 35's till i have a extra grand to buy a dana60 and 14ff. but that might be some time yet, and i have been giving alot of thought to the shakle flip in the back too. i'll order a steering arm as soon as i'm on my days off.
*bonus* the guy with the springs has the top, windshield section and door caps from his 75 he'll throw in with the springs.

ditto what dremu said. Those axles might hold up to 38s for light use, but the 4.10 gears will be too high. That ratio is OK for 35s.
