Help! Any advice on a 700R4

DOnt you over rev the engine ant high speeds with the 4.10?

Naw. Even with 4.56's and 33's the RPM going down the road at 75 was OK. 3.08's are going to seriously lug down the motor, even with stock sized tires. GM eventually got that stupid idea out of their heads and shipped the last years with 3.73's, which were fine with stock tires. Start going with larger tires and you need to drop the gearing some more.
 
BTW, I just saw that you had a 2400 stall converter. That is waaaaay too high for a truck. Stock is around 1400 or so. A 2400 is going to generate a lot of heat when not locked up, especially in a truck...
 
I had a Corvette Converter on my 700 for a while (took some bad advice) whick is almost 2000 stall. Well the lockup stopped working and 4th gear would shoot the temp guage up FAST, even with a big cooler on the tranny. Even in 3rd gear with the lockup off it would get warm (this is all with 4.10 gears and 33 then 35" tires). With a stock-type converter it's hard to even get the guage to come up.

So get rid of that 2400 stall converter. Not to mention how crappy it must make crawling over stuff.
 
Yeah, running into all kinds of fun stuff with this one. Already chose a trans from Bowtie Overdrives. By the time I get ready for It hopefully I will have my 4.56 in and should be ready for the next adventure.
 
Going to agree that while maybe not the exact cause, 3.08's, high stall converter, and larger tires are likely generating a LOT of heat.

I'd really think about getting a trans temp gauge installed to make sure that you aren't overheating it.

Was your replacement converter a lockup, and is lockup working?

And how about the converter? Was it replaced after every rebuild? That should be a given as well...there is no way to clean one out, anything that went through the trans could have made it's way in there too, not to mention any damage that may have caused to it if heat was a factor in every failure. Expensive piece to replace, but I have yet to hear a rebuilder say it's a good idea to re-use a converter off of a failed trans that sent metal fragments through the system.
 
Yeah converter was replaced each time. It wont be happening to me again..New trans coming next month and 10b getting new gears front and rear. Trans temp gauge is on top of my toolbox..F**k what else can I do right?
 
Does your lockup work? That's a big source of heat in these transmissions, it will certainly help to make sure that works as well. Your trans temp gauge should allow you to keep your eye on things, that may give you some more clues.

I ran 3.08's and 32's on my truck for quite some time with no ill effects, but I wasn't wheeling it hard either, and I made sure to install a trans cooler. No rocket ship on the street, but I wasn't afraid of the pedal. With 3.08's I needed it. :)
 
Lock-up is good, I think its a combination of bad gearing, too much tire and alot more horses that made it give up. Its street driven and as always mood is the deciding factor on how it gets treated. Ah well, next time around.. Dont get me wrong I really am enjoying the truck, just paying for the previous owners supidity. I needed a driveline and got a whole truck..so thats where the issues started. Wont give her up for anything, just be glad to be out of the woods with this issue. Thanks for your help. --- Jesse
