HELP!! Gotta make a decision now

im in the middle of looking at two trucks to buy, and i need some help balancing the pros and cons.

Truck #1
1989 Blazer, 5.7 TBI, 700r4, 169,000 miles, rebuilt tranny 13,XXX ago.

Truck #2
1995 Z71 1500, 5.7 TBI, 4L60E, 250,000 miles, goodwrench crate 350 100,XXX ago.

both asking $2,500, truck 1 will take $2,100, truck 2 still thinking my $2,000 offer. Both owners claim 16mpg highway.

The issues:
truck #2: when you let off the gas it goes to about 350RPM's for a few seconds, almost dies, and than returns to regular idle (700+-) Is this a big deal, what might it be? other than that, it runs strong, no smoke, pulls easy.

truck #2: transmission fluid is nasty, black. owner says dealer recommend not to flush, got the 4L60E. Shifts fine and all, just seems with such high mileage and the nasty fluid its on borrowed time. a friend had a similar truck and we beat the piss outta it and she went fine to 260,000 when he traded it in.

truck #1: has a rebuilt 700r4. should i be worried about it? are they a good transmission for daily driving and mall crawling? also the intake manifold gaskets seem to be needing replaced.

any additional comments are appreciated and hoped for.

when a dealer doesn't recommend a flush its cause if they do they think the trans won't work after they flush it

Just my own opinion but the solid axle trucks always win for me even if it means more work

Also the 95 sounds like a huge pile. that wasn't a good year for those trucks

Yea if the 95 was the vortec then I would jump on it maybe....But the blazer will be the better deal it sounds like. Plus I bet the blazer will hold it's value more if it's
rust free

blazer for sure.looks like a better deal.if dealer dosnt think flushing would help, that tranny is already on itsa way out.fkushing and replaceing fluids would probably re move the debree that is holding to the clutches and making it still run.haha.go blazer as was said aready.89 was a good year.

Blazer!

I have to vote for the straight axle truck and the lower overall mileage.

i'd vote for the Blazer just for the fact that the '95 has 220k miles on it, and if the trans fluid is that black it sounds like it's hardly ever been changed, and the trans itself has never been replaced or rebuilt, it's gonna die REAL soon.

been through a few of them, seen anough of them, you're LUCKY to get near the 200k mile mark on them if they are taken care of.

get the Blazer.

Yup another vote for the Blazer. The 700R4 will be fine (if not ideal) for a DD/Mall Crawler.

so i got the blazer and im so happy i did all is working great!!!!

As if anyone here would steer you wrong. :wink1: Glad you're happy and the deal worked out!

Where you at in Idaho?

so i got the blazer and im so happy i did all is working great!!!!

Now check mpg and post back, i'm betting it only gets 14mpg tops and even less if it's lifted and or has larger tires. Keep in mind if gearing or tire size has been changed you cannot use the odometer to calculate mpg unless someone had the speedo recalibrated after the gear/tire change.

im in Rexburg, ID

i will def check the mileage. as stated b4, the owner claims he got 16mpg. all stock, 5.7tbi, 700r4, 245/75/16. fueled up today, and the waiting begins. pray for high teens is all i can do. mods to follow as $ and time allow. headers, CAI, cat-back, gut the cat. some 31x10.5's a/t's on some hurricanes i have.
