A friend of mine is having problems with a freshly rebuilt 700R4. Around town it drives fine, but once it gets a few highway miles it loses overdrive and seems to be overheating. It puked some ATF out the dipstick tube last time.

When we checked to B&M cooler, it felt hot (really hot) on one side, but cool on the other side. The lines were the same way, in was hot, out was cool.

He was losing reverse after the highway drive as well.

Could it be a partially blocked cooler? The cooler is a new plate-type unit.

do a full flush of the system by pulling the outlet line on the cooler and running the engine while puring clean fluid in the dipstick tube. This should clean out whatever is clogging the cooler.

I know a lot of people use Vaseline to retain the check balls inside the valve body. Its usually fine because it dissovles pretty easially, and is removed with the flush that should be done after the first few miles.

Id say flush it, put a new filter in, and see what happens.
