Any Honda Tech's on the board?!!? I recently accquired a 1997 Honda Civic EX 4cyl, a/t, 2 door. To start off from a stop you have to manually downshift and being you can only go down to 2nd gear, that's where it starts out from. Up shifts fine and even downshifts fine while driving. Will go into reverse fine but when you come to a stop and try to start back off it's still in high gear and you have to manually downshift again.

It was my brother's car and he drove it for 7 years. The last 2 years the trans has been doing this. Said he spoke with a Honda Tech and he told him the pump seal is bad. But after 2 years with no signs of getting worse I would think it would have gone completely out by now or at least burned something up. My guy at O'Rielley's said that it's more than likely a transmission solenoid that about $100. Any thoughts?

I am not a honda tech but. Have you ever put it on a scanner? If you have a problem with the trans it may show up. There is a code for a bad 1-2 shift solonoid on OBD2 ECMs. The 1-2 shift solonoid can go bad or stick causing your problem.

AUtozone will hook it up to a scanner for free. Is the check engine light on?

Check out hondaswap.com and see if they have a list of the codes to help to help you.

My cousin had a 93 accord with the same problem. It would go in reverse fine but when you put it in drive it would start in 3rd gear it would only go down to second if you put it in 1st or 2nd but never would actually go into first. She took it to a mechanic and found it was the Transmission computer module. In her car both the ECM and TCM are located under the passenger floor board just under the dash. I pulled one from a junkyard just made sure the code on the module matched and put it in for her. After I replaced the TCM for her it ran perfect.
