Help.. Hub problems

The front right hub on my 83 seems to be making noize and jumping in and out of lock.... these are fixed locked hubs and I dont know what would cause this... if they have to be replaced am I better off going with unlockable hubs since most my time is on the street.. what do I do to find out the problem.. any help would be great.. Thanks Keith

If you have auto hubs your best bet is to replace them with manual hubs. Warn makes a good replacement set for 60 -70 dollars. It is a direct replacement and an easy job.
If your rig is full time 4 wheel drive you(identified by no 2 wheel drive slection on your transfer case shifter) will also need the full time to part time conversion kit for your transfer case. This is a bit more involved and requires some mechanical skill.
Changing the hubs to manual operation is probabilly the best way for you to go if you do a lot of street driving. Youll get better MPG and less wear and tear on your rig

I do have a 2h selection on my transfer case shifter, is there any real big difference between the warn hubs and the warn premium hubs. or wont it really matter since im on the street most the time.. Thanks

All you will need is the new hubs then
For your uses the Warn Milemarker hubs should be good. They are a little cheaper.
I replaced my auto hubs with Superwinch hubs and have had no problems with them either. I use my 89 pretty hard off road.
 
Warn and Milemarker are two different brands. Neither are the same manufacturer. Just wanted to let you know.

BTW, I would prefer Warn premium hubs over any Milemarker any day! Just my opinion and past experience!

Are manual hubs really better than auto hubs? I don't do a lot of off roading and I like the shift-on-the-slow-fly thing. I had manuals on my CJ5 many years ago. Mine hubs are original and I have rebuilt them a couple of times to keep them in good shape. Are they really inferior to manual hubs?

It's nice to be to shift on the fly... but all I have with my autos are problems. One likes to pop in and out for no real reason other to tick me off.... they stink! I have a set of manuals to stick on if I get to do this axle swap here soon.... I like the fact that with manuals you have to get out... makes you look at what you are about to drive through a lot better which is a good thing and good way to not end up in 4 feet of mud.... if you like your manuals though and have good luck with them then go ahead and run them... but they do tend to fail just when you really need them from what I have heard and seen... but if you keep them clean and well taken care of maybe you will have some better lucky?

I also recommend Warn hubs... I have the SS milemarkers now and they suck! IMO manual hubs are way better then auto's. Auto will fail.... and when they do it always seems to be when you need them most... whether it is out in the mud or just a messy snowy day on the roads... it sucks canal water either way.

I ran some Milemarkers in the past and they sucked! Half the time they wouldnt turn all the way to engage. Most of the time they are too hard to turn at all.
