OK so I picked up this drive train complete from a '91 3+3. got it home. now that its light out I'm checking it over alittle. 100% sure it came from a '91 crewcab. but its not a 599 block. and it has a goodwrench sticker on the pass valve cover. but it appears to have the oil feed boss for the turbo in it. as thats what the banks kit is plumbed into its own fitting on the block above the filter. and how do you visually ID a J code intake from a C code intake? I forget. is it stricktly the lack of EGR plumbing ports?

You have a 6.5L crate engine there Luke. The 506 block is the latest version of the 6.5L, produced between 2000 and 2001.

Now, that said, this engine does have two versions much like the J code and C code. They can be identified by two ways, one is through the presence of an EGR valve in the intake (take the turbo pressure pot off and take a look), or by the presense of 10137567 heads. The light duty engines will have an EGR and will not have that particular casting of heads, the heavy duty version will not have an EGR, and will have those heads.

If you have the HD version of the engine, it is the newest AMG block that does not crack, has oil sprayers, ceramic coated pistons etc.

If it was purchased as a crate engine, it likely came as a long block, and was fitted with the 91's intake, injection system etc, then turbocharged aftermarket.

Either way, congrats! You definitely got more than you bargained for with that one! I wish I'd picked it up now!

but without the banks gear on it. it looks just like a mechanical 6.2/ the harness laying on it is all from the truck with the fuse box and everything. the injection pump looks like a 6.2 one. but I'm not sure I've seen a N/A mechanical 6.5 pump though.

it came out of this 3+3 from that guy in swan hills. Scott, good guy met him yesterday.

he said the engine was replaced with a crate engine some time ago. but why would it be replaced with a 6.5 if it was a 6.2? just a little confused.

great score  I think :haha:

Yup, thats what I mean by someone bought a longblock (aka no accessories, comes with only heads, valve covers, timing cover, harmonic balancer and an intake) then put all the stuff from their original 6.2L diesel onto the new engine. I'm willing to bet you'd gain lots by putting a mechanical 6.5L injection pump and injectors on it!

Last time I checked a you couldn't even buy a 6.2L from GM anymore, only a 6.5L.

looks like an open intake to me..........i don't have time to pull the top end apart right now. but I'll check the heads too, later. its got struts 1 on each side, from each motor mount to a boss in the bottom of the bellhousing.

That is a non-EGR intake. I'd guess that you'll find you have the heavy casting heads as well!

Good score on that engine Luke!
