My jimmy no longer has the vin it came with. Iits registered as a 76 but it doesn't look like one, what are some other things i can look at to get a definite year

Thanks

There is the vin on the dash, on the door jamb and in the glove box. Those will tell you the yr of the body. There is also a frame stamp but if it has a different body that will not match. Upload some pics to imageshack or photobucket and link them so we can see.

Does the rear floorboard stay at one height from the tailgate to the back of the front seat? IIRC that would make it a 76 or 77. I think in 78 Chevy dropped the floor in front of the rear seat to give more leg room.

thanks guys found the vin in the glove box its an 86 ten years newer than i thought at least the body is not so sure about the rest where would i find the frame stamp

That might mean just the glove box door is off an 86!...the numbers on the frame are stamped about halfway down the rails under the doors roughly..usually on the drivers side ,but I've seen them on both sides before or just the passenger side too..

I have seen the dates on the back of the instrument cluster too,but that is easily swapped from another vehicle so theres no sure way to know if it was the original one..sometimes door and interior panels have production dates molded into them..

Yes 78 was the first year of the dropped floorboard, as well as moving the body mounts to the out side of the frame. Also 78 was the last model with out a gas door. 77 had a 15 slot grill and the 76 had the 32 slot grill. That's about the only way to tell a 76 from a 77. If the grills were swapped then it's a numbers only game.

This has helped me a few times.

what does the date say on the back of the removable ashtray? I know it could have been swapped, but they really don't break so it could be original...

There may be a frame stamp on the pass side frame rail, on the top, by the engine crossmember area.

well my 79 gmc grill was different than my 79 chevy grill.
