I am in the process of restoring a 1987 R10 LWB with a 305 TBI ... In my teardown process to remove the engine, I have been taking my time, photographing all wiring connections, bracket configurations, bagging and tagging bolts to the respective areas .. so I know 2 months from now where everything goes and i don't want to say where does this go. .. I did this with my 85 K5 Restore and I have used those pictures to help may others on this forum ..

When I was attempting to remove the TBI it was stuck to the manifold and instead of prying straight upwards, I used a small rubber mallet to tap it sideways like I have with a carburetor years ago.

I was busy and not paying close attention, but I swear when I lifted the TBI there was metal piece on the manifold between the bores. I could have been dreaming, but bottom line, I have no idea what or where this piece goes. and could it have fallen from something else on the upper part of the engine ..

In researching the various TBI, some have a different base molding between the bores, it appears there are two types... with one more prevalent. Not Mine.... I heard it called a bridge and an island . With the respective gaskets going to the different types.

This metal "Tit" is tiny, the base is six sided and the inside it appears to have threads ... and like I said ... I have no idea where this goes.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also .. I see two gaskets in the rebuild kit and the most common question I see in blogs is which do I use ... I thought I could figure it out, but I am as lost today as when I started... so comments welcome here.

Thanks in Advance,
Rob

That looks to me like the pintle from the iac valve. No idea how it got in there though?
Actually looking at the base of the tbi, i see how it fell in there.
Thanks .. that is a start to look at .. the IAC valve is still in the TBI so maybe

@Fastereddie - Thanks again for the help in identifying the piece .. It was the tip from a previous IAC .. and was setting on the intake when I removed the TBI … it may have been lodged in the vein and jarred loose when I bumped it with the rubber mallet

I’m not sure on the gasket. I always try to match up what came off. Not always foolproof if someone else used the wrong one before me! Maybe @Wes Harden might remeber how to tell?

Iirc the big block and small block gaskets are different. looks like you had the open on your tbi. I will look and see if I have both gaskets in my pile, then we can compare.

Spaced looking yesterday.
Found what I have today.
One small block and one big block both are open centers.
I believe you need open center,as you tbi has nothing to sealvthe gasket to intake.

Yea @Wes Harden .. that makes sense .. some blogs I came across mentioned something about the area between the bores with the solid area could get pulled into the bores .. even though the manifold is solid the TBI would be open ... I assume the area between the TBI and Manifold would not really make a difference since the surrounding area is sealed with the gasket. Being the 305 the small bore would be the appropriate gasket for sure.

Thanks for the help on this

Truth to that. I have seen the solid gasket sucked out into the venturi many times.

I'm thinking that pintle froze to the TB. Since the truck wouldn't idle right, somebody pulled the IAC out, unscrewing the shaft from the pintle while they did it. Either that freed it or messing with a new one did and the pintle has laid in there ever since. I wonder if the IAC passage in the TB is able to pass a pintle?

It's clear the TB has to be at least partly clear in the middle, so IAC air can get to both throttle bores.

Unfortunately I have no idea what the PO may or may not have done. It was not running when I purchased it .. both fuel pumps shot and tanks full of nasty aged fuel. Price was right and the Body was in near perfect shape.

I was definitely surprised to find it when I popped the TB off the manifold ..

Just glad it's identified and can concentrate on other WTF issues .. LOL ..
