Heres my opinion.
I will NEVER give up my 700 for the simple fact of the low first gear.
We arnt drag racing here so if you get some beefy clutches, and a vette servo you have a pretty built tranny that will last a long time.
They get a bad name because all of these people that have had there tranny go out have stock trannies.
I havent heard of to many people blowing one thats been rebuilt by someone who knows what they are doing.
Another thing is that as mentioned above the TV cable is a HUGE part in how the tranny works. If it is off 1/8" your tranny WILL die. This is alos a big reason why alot of them fail. These 20 year old stock 700's will stretch the cable over time. It needs to be checked every year or so to make sure it is still adjusted correctly.
Also when adjusting the tranny dont use the WOT ratcheting method get a good pressure guage and dial it in perfectly.
