ok, when at higher speeds (30+mph) and i'm going around sweeping corners to the right (i.e. mountain roads) i get a nasty humming noise that sort of vibrates the floor under the cab. what could cause this? i've got enough powersteering fluid, and i don't notice any other wierd problems. could mis-alignment cause this?

Could be misalignment issues. Misalignment, combined with some tire roll, could be the side lugs grabbing or something.

Mine does that when I coast and it has to do with the u joint angles on my rear shaft. The backlash in the detroit actually amplifies it and it sounds almost like I am grinding rocks if I have the windows down. It is basically (in my case) the slipyoke vibrating on the t-case output.

mine does it whether or not i'm on the fuel, and did it prior to my installing the detroit this last weekend.

The thing that catches my attention is you say on right turns. It a vehicle makes a humming noise only when turning one direction, the first thing I look at is the wheel bearings. Might want to make sure they haven't backed off, dryed out, or just plain worn out.

This should take care of the noise issue...

i was wondering that too... i recently replaced the ball joints on that side and they looked good. guess i'll have to take it apart and check it again. i hate to think wheel bearings... i'm getting a bit sick of pulling those front hubs apart.

other possibility

If you replaced a ball joint, I assume you had the thing re-aligned. Either way, it could be that the bearings weren't torqued properly in reinstallation; that a 4wd hub has gotten locked up; that the camber is wrong; or that the caster is wrong. (As to the last two: You know the kind of noise a bad shopping cart makes?)
