Help Me Occupy my Kids for 2,000 miles / 5 Days in a Rental Car!!!

So we're going on a Grand Adventure. Nana finally died (Bless her but really her mind died years ago so it's a blessing at this point...) and we're headed 1,000 miles each way from NC to IL and back over the next 5 days. Leaving in the morning. (Friday)

My son is 8 and daughter is 5 and really they travel well but this will be a doozie of a roadtrip, and with the van's health questionable I thought it prudent to rent a car. Probably an Impala. Maybe a Charger! But a car none the less, and we're used to roadtripping in the van which has 4 captain's chairs, a large bed, coolers, CD/DVD/TV/PS2/etc. The car is gonna get boring.

Here's a short list of games I remember from my distant childhood before cell phones or having a TV in your car was even dreamt of...

*Stupid Rental Car Tricks of course. "Cool Dad, do it again!!!" Sorta thing. Dad loves the e-brake.

*I-Spy...

*Slug Bug...

*Get the truckers to honk...

*Singing...

*The Quiet Game.

And a couple of other 'quiz' games we have that kill a little time, but get old fast.

Help!!! Less than 20 hours before we hit the road!!!

how about pick up a bum and see if you can convert him to your religion in under an hour? let each kid try:D

Go to walmart and buy a cheap portable dvd player... it'll be well worth the money.

Was it really worth it to drive?

Sure a plane ticket is expensive but when you factor in a rental car, gas and lost time at home vs. flying I bet it'd be close...

sometimes time is money, but sometimes your time still is more free than actual money. :D

Yeah I'm headed to BFE so far out in the sticks that the closest airport is 5 hours from 'home' and I'd still have to rent the car. So it would save a little time but cost a lot more and then I'd have to juggle around flights and stuff.

LMAO @ "2 Tylenol PM's, a bum, cough medicine, duct tape, and a rope..." cuz it sounds like the closest thing to a date I've had in years!!!

Benadryl works well too... I usually take a portable dvd player a power inverter and a game cube...

5 days?!?!? Me and my gf knocked out an 1200mile roadtrip for some truck parts in 20 hours. That was in a stripped WT with no cruise control. Tylenol PM the kids about the time they get bored, then let em sleep the rest of the way. :wink1:

Or like was said a cheap portable DVD player. Also at target last weekend saw a magnetic travel board game set, checkers, chess, etc and it was like 8 bucks. Also had a travel sized 'connect 4' game.

There's got to be hundreds of those small magnetic puzzle games. One i remember in particular is the triangle with pegs. Jump the pegs and try to end up with as few remaining as possible.

Magnetic checkers.... so on and so forth.

DVD player is good but knowing my kids, i'd have to have one for each or it'd be a more valuable thing to fight over.

Good luck!
