I just dropped my 454/465/205 combo in my '72 blazer. It's runs decent but I'm using the worn out carb that was on the 350 I pulled out. That carb happens to be a Q-Jet. It's old and tired and probably not worth rebuilding.
The blazer is going to be used for driving to work and hauling my quad to the desert.

The 454 is a fresh rebuild using peanut heads. a mild rv cam with an E-brock Performer 2.0 intake, headers and around 9.5:1 compression.

Right now, I'm really only dead set on having an electric choke.

So, I'm looking at a Holley 3310-3, an Edelbrock 1411, and another Q-jet originally on a 454 that's posted in the classifieds here.

Opinions/thoughts please? Point me in the right direction.

Matt

A Q-Jet would be a good choise if you get a nice newer one but they can be kinda pricey for the good ones... Do not get an Edelbrock Performer... You will regret it if u ever have to go up a steep hill cuz it will die. Personally I would go with the larger Holley Truck avenger carb. Excellent off-road, and excellent starts. I havet yet to have a problem. They are electric choke too and it works great!

I've never had a problem with my performer. Idled at about 60* incline and just blew a little more smoke.

man u got lucky most people i have talked to hated theirs including me... It was good for regualr driving purposes. I did stubble a couple times when I would hit a bump. And I also had some hard starts esspcially after it would die

x2 for Holley truck avenger

after initial setup, they are THE BEST performing carb out there. Some might argue that the tried and true q-jet is better, but you get more power and responce out of a Holley than you can ever get out of a q-jet.

Yeah, I would have to call it lucky. It's a carb that's been around too. I bought it new in '98 for my '64, then it went on a '78 nova, then an '83 3/4 ton, now to my '80 Blazer. It's been rejetted as applications changed, but that is the only mod it's had. never even had to adjust float level.

I have a 3310-1 that I'd be happy to rebuild for ya. I run one on my blazer that is modified to be nearly as good as a truck avenger off road.

the one in the classifieds is from an '86...are there any particular years i should look for?

As long as it's not one for California emissions or high altitude, should be fine.

Personally I'd look into re-jetting it if it wasn't from a 454, or your engine needs more or less fuel, but that's typically all you need to do to get them running good.

I like the later Q-jets more than earlier ones.

I'd only consider two carburetors for a 454 in a K5 that goes off road.

770CFM Holley Truck Avenger
Stock 454 Q-Jet

Just make sure you get one for the year truck if it ask. I put a newer 454 in mine and ordered a carb for the year of the motor and ended up with a lot of vacume ports off the carb that I didn't need and ended up having to plug them all.
