So i am building my race truck. It’s a 91 swb gmc not square body. I haven’t measured the current wms on the 10 bolt, but I want to stay as close to stock as possible.

Anyway it’s getting a 427 stroked ls3 with a solid roller cam, 11.2 compression, ported heads that flow 390 cfm, and supercharged... and also the tr6060 transmission that is getting the t56 magnum tailshaft housing and output shaft so that it has the slip yoke.... I’m shooting for 1200 rwhp on e85.... I can’t wait to pick it up from machine shop. Also considering the holley dominator efi setup if anyone has used that let’s hear it too...

Truck should be around 3700 pounds.. I’ve been planning on a 9.5sf with dutchman 5 lug shafts (basically a 454ss rear end).

But I would love to have disc brakes... and I have read the 9.5 isn’t as efficient and will have more drivetrain loss compared to other axles... Here are the axles I’m considering..

Built ford 9 inch

Dana 60 something like a strange s60

Sf 9.5

Or what else should I consider???

I'm a 9" fan myself.

1200rwhp and a manual trans is hard on rear end for sure.

I'm assuming drag truck. How much tire you gonna have? What rear suspension?

9” with 35 spline chromoly axle shafts. And by Chromoly I mean NOT moser

Parts in the center section:
Richmond gears
Strange or Mark Williams components
Detroit or spool from one of the above
Daytona pinion support
Brace the housing

I guess I forgot to add a few details. And I basically know nothing about the 9 inch. I’ve never built, owned or been around one.

Rear suspension will be for now at least cal tracs and a 305 or 315 tire, and when I go to the trac a 12” or 12.5 slick. I don’t have a cage and I’m not a fan of hacking up my newly painted cab to add one or bars going out the back glass.... without a cage it’s probably not going to be allowed at my local Dragstrip. so it may never end up with ladder bars to really get it to hook good.

Will see a little drag strip time, but mostly street time eating mustangs for lunch.

Cal tracs work fine

Seen a couple of Stock Eliminator cars running 9s with them

if you can turn a wrench you can do a ford 9" or 14ff axle . they work the same . just the 9" drops the whole chunk out of the housing .

great axles to play with for first time builders .

and as to the 14ff they make 5 lug hubs for them . . . . you would then have a 14ff 10.5" gear 5 lug full float axle .

I had thought about a 14bff, but too heavy for me... that’s when i decided 14sf. But it seems kinda heavy too. And I really want disc brakes, and I’m not sure if it is possible on the sf and have a functioning parking brake.

What about any of the late model axles with disc brakes? Are any of them up to the task?

Honestly a 30 spline 10 bolt is pretty good and would probably be ok. Lots of late model disc brake ten bolts out there.

3700lbs and 1200hp is capable of doing low to mid 8's. I'd at least do a cage inside the cab.

With mostly street duty and 12.5's 31 spline cm axles would work, but 35 spline are better.

Personally with a manual and alot of street duty I'd do a truetrac or other helical gear limited slip.

The trutrac is what I’m most likely to go with. I’ve considered a selectable e locker too though.

And yea I think it will be capable of 9’s but I believe that requires me to run the bars through my back glass to be legal at the strip. I pretty much refuse to do that.

Another event I really want to complete in is the texas mile... again requires a cage at the speed I’m capable of running. Maybe I should go to one of the local race car cage builders and see what my options are. I would have to have most of it removable for my normal driving

there is a kit for the older ford 9" to use ford 8.8 disk brakes from explorer and have it bolt on . gets you disk / parking all in 1 simple bolt on setup with the spacer rings from the kit .

i would prob go 9" for the HUGE volume of gear ratio's and traction devices available.

ya my 14ff idea would be strong and cool but agreed to heavy .

The 14 b SF will hold up. But 9" is the go to axle for lots of drag guys.

You can build the crap out of it. More gear ratios than most axles. Shoot you can even get softer springs for a 9" Detroit!

Oh and like has been mentioned super simple setup.

I have rebuilt 9" on picnic tables several times. A guy breaks the housing but finds a spare. Swap the guts? Zero problem, takes more time to remove bearings than set it up lol

What’s wrong with moser? I’ve been looking at their complete setup with brakes and everything that is a direct bolt in for my year and model truck...

Everyone Ive seen has broke. 20 years drag racing up through Super Stock and Super Gas
Wouldn't run Moser if they paid me

The only crap part about the 9in IMO is the axle bearings. That sucks to replace on the side of the road.

Does a six lug exist? I have literally spent days online looking for an answer. I was not aware of the five lug either.
