Help me plan out an overlanding rig...

I've thought about getting something like this and doing a 4x4 conversion:

You can find them pretty cheap, but often for good reason. Roof-mounted A/C would surely get deleted, whether by choice or by tree. Would be nice to find something lower or with a pop-up roof, though. Would kind of wreck the trip when the bedroom shatters on a trail.

I think a pop top mounted on a suburban would give height without sacrificing significant mobility. But the camper van looks too tall for my area.

Wifey agrees with your line of thought, though.

A pop top suburban would be cool! I'm a little too tall, so it may not work well for me, but it would be better than no pop top.

Do I wanna know why you're trolling the Denver craigslist server looking for my next camping vehicle? :dunno:

It does look neat. Something like that would be an easy sell in the Wifey department.

He says he wants one "unique vehicle" in trade. I could offer him a unique vehicle. Several times over. But unique does not necessarily mean desirable. :dunno:

Yea, I meant I wonder what he wants in cash.

  1. Buy Suburban (or FIX Suburban)
  2. Add roof-top tent, with door facing the rear, which doubles as a rear awning
  3. Get the add-on changing room, which now surrounds your rear barn doors
  4. Add amenities as you go, like kitchen in the back, suspension upgrades, gears, lockers, tires.

That's pretty much what we're looking at doing. Resurrect the 'burb and use the barn doors & awning that we already have. Build from there as ideas morph. Don't have need for a roof tent yet, I can fit more stuff and more people in the 'burb than I could in a K5. And lots more than I can fit inside my K10's short cab. But the expansion opportunities are limitless.

Lessons to come out of this trip:

Vehicle camping is much funner than tenting in the rain. I knew this but have yet again been reminded.
It's also faster when it comes to setup and tear down.
Soft suspension is worth its weight in foam padding.
Since I don't want huge tires, I would benefit from having a locker to help in limited-traction situations.
I'm definitely sold on buying a pop-up shower tent (like Dave's).
A roll-off rear awning would be really nice.
Waterproof totes would be nicer than messing with a tarp each day. We had some of them, but since not all of them were waterproof we still had to tarp everything.

I was kinda surprised that between the 3 GM trucks none of us could share spare tires. :screwy:

I don't know when the build will restart, but it definitely has moved up the priority chain quite a bit.

Comeon Campy, buy the suburban in Englehood

You buy it.

1) I don't want an extra vehicle right now
2) You're a whole lot closer than I am
3) It doesn't take smelly fuel. That's an issue in my book (I'm aiming for long range and lower operating cost). :deal:

'Twould be lots cheaper and probably easier to convert my own rig's roof than to try converting that one to man fuel.

I have more vehicles than you. Suck it up and buy a gasser

You are woefully under-vehicled

Nope. 3 gassers + 3 diesels = more vehicles than I could possibly drive. The problem wasn't so much having 6 vehicles, it's that 4 of them were simultaneously working. The dead ones don't bother me, but if I have a surplus of working vehicles I think I should take advantage of this opportunity and sell a couple of them. Turn them into money so I can continue chucking funds at the broken ones.
