wiring. I had a buddy helping me by taking it off. Put the wires back on according to him, now it spins but won't engage!!!!!!!!!

Starter is rebuilt and tested on a bench at a local place so its the wiring fault.

I assume all the wires go on the solonoids top bolt.

Oh and the heat shield that goes above the starter how the heck does that go on

I'm guessing that the starter is on a Chevy. Solenoid on the starter should have either 3 or 4 terminals, the top is 3/8" stud and is battery and at least 1 other, 2 small terminals one, labeled S should have a purple wire. The other small terminal (some solenoids are missing this one) is labeled R and was for a resistor by-pass wire to the coil on '74 and earlier starters. The 4th terminal is connected to the starter motor.

When the purple wire goes hot the plunger is pulled into the solenoid pushing the drive into the flywheel teeth and moving the contact plate to connect the two large terminals to make the motor turn. In order for the starter motor to run the plunger must move, so either the starter drive is defective (won't show on a bench test) or there aren't any teeth on the flywheel in its present location. Rotate the engine by hand and retry.

Thanks Gus.

When its 10 degrees outside my brain slows down LOL

Like was said above the purple wire goes to the small post on the soloniod. The upper big post is the power into. Pretty simple.

As far as the heat shield goes it attaches on the open ended hole to the same hole that the starter brace attaches too.

On the other end it goes a bellhousing bolt. I did have to tweak mine a bit.

So hopefully this info will stay and if someone searches for starter problems it will come up.
