Hello all,

I was hoping you guys could help me out with some wiring that I needed to do on my blazer to finally get it running. When I bought it it was missing a whole bunch of parts due to thieves so I’ve been trying to piece together everything to get it running again. It was missing the disty, coil, carb, and some random hoses. I found a nice ’73 (I believe) pickup in a local junkyard that had everything I needed so I took everything and proceeded to piece this thing together. I’ve hit a wall now because I’ve gotten to where I need to wire everything up and noticed that I have all these wires from the old setup but none at all really have places on the new setup. I have always loved these trucks and was sooo happy when I finally was able to get one after all these years, so I really would like some help getting it running :o

First off, here’s the details in quick

78 Blazer (mine)
Edelbrock spread bore performer intake, unknown model number
No carb, disty, or coil when purchased

73 *I think* Pickup (donor vehicle)
Q-Jet Carb
Disty
External coil, shaped like MSD Blaster coil

Now I’m trying to take those parts off the 73 and adapt them to the 78, but I really am getting confused and I tried using the Haynes manual and it’s really not helping me at all. I’m very new to these motors and old vehicles in general. The guy that sold it to me didn’t really know anything about the truck, it was his dad’s and when his dad died, it got left to him in the will. He was planning to keep it but after it got stripped he decided to sell it.

I’d really like to get this thing running, but I’ve completely hit forward moving limit right now because of this wiring..

Here’s the wires that I don’t know where to wire too..

sorry for the blurry pics, phone..

black connector, green wire coming out leading to another connector and a black wire with a ring terminal on it.

cleaned this wire the best that I could and i'm pretty sure it's blue, its so dirty its hard to tell, even after cleaning it with electronics cleaner and carb cleaner

green wire with rubber cap thing

All wires are coming from the main harness thing from behind the motor I'm pretty..

Theres also these 2 rubber lines coming from a box on the drivers side fender that I don't know where they go, I also have no clue what the box is for.

That year Blazer would have had an HEI distributor, and that may be why you are having so many issues getting it wired. I don't have my Blazer here to look at, so I can't be much help on the wiring side of things.

The box on the fender is for cruise control, it is called a transducer. The two lines are vacuum lines, and I can't remember which way they connect, but one goes to the vacuum diaphram on the engine, the other goes to a vacuum port on the engine. It probably won't work, but if you want to give it a try I will look at mine today when I get home and let you know which is which.

To complete the cruise system, there should be a single button on the turn signal stalk that turns the system on and sets it, as well as acceleration with that button.

thank you, this helps me out a bunch!..

as far as the cruise system, I'll probably just tear it out..

and do I have to use an hei setup, or is there someway to run without it for now?..

I'm really strapped for money and would really like to get this thing running :(

There is a way to run it without the HEI, but I don't know the specifics on what you would have to change. I am sure someone here will come up with an idea, or know exactly what you need to do.

As for the cruise system, make sure you get a new speedo cable, since the cable runs through that box then into the dash. Removing the box requires a new cable to run from the transfer case to the speedo directly.

alright cool, at least i know theres hope, haha..

i'm gonna run by the junkyard and see if i can find an hei disty there, but I highly doubt i'll be able to find one..if I can i'll be able to just return the one i have and get the hei one, but like i said, I reaaally doubt i'll find one..

well i guess I'll just leave the cruise control for now till i can find a new cable.

That fourth picture appears to be the temperature sending unit connector. It would most likely be a green wire, and should connect to the sending unit on the drivers side head between #1 and #3 cylinders.

That's the only one I am fairly certain of, the others I just don't know without having my Blazer here to look at.

alright i'll try that in the morning when i get home from work.

thank you for your help, I really do appreciate it..

If you have the older points type distributor and coil. It is very simple to hook up.
The black single wire that comes out of the dist goes to the negative side of the coil, marked with -. Then you run 12 volts switched from the ignition switch to the + positive side of the coil. There should be a red wire that powered the old hei dist you can use. Maybe the one in the 1st and second pics?

The orange wire with the white plug looks like the hot for the distributer. The one with the black plug looks like the one that plugs in down on the frame near the steering box. Dont remember what its for tho.

Should hook into the wiring from firewall by air conditioning duct. (right behind in picture)Should hook into third picture.

Should hook into first picture black connector with green wire going in and out and one open connection area

Looks like Temp gauge cleaned this wire the best that I could and i'm pretty sure it's blue, its so dirty its hard to tell, even after cleaning it with electronics cleaner and carb cleaner

lol no, I actually think most of their cars are hideous, at least the ones around here...

plus, one day I was driving down our one main street here and one of them threw a wrench at my car as I was passing them in oncoming lanes, I have no clue why, I don't know if it was like a wrong place wrong time situation and he just felt like randomly throwing a wrench or if he just really doesn't like silver jettas...

not a big fan of them.. just been using this nickname for a long time

As for the distributor stuff

I wasn't able to make it out to the junkyard today..hopefully in the morning I wont feel like a zombie and I can stop by and look around. If they have an HEI disty there then I'm gonna see if I can exchange the points one that I bought for the HEI one, but if not, I'm gonna do some retro wiring and attempt to use the points disty..

I will hopefully know by tomorrow what I'm gonna do, then I'll update you guys.

Edit: Oh and thanks again guys, I appreciate the help :)

Hmmm, the cars around here are pretty cool and I've never heard of an incident like that... sorry to hear.

They are all gangsterish people around here from what i've seen..

but then again, this city is just full of that crap..

everyday that I live here i miss Arkansas even more :(

well I went to the junkyard and they didn't have anything. i think i'm just gonna wait a few weeks and see if i can come up with enough money to just get a brand new disty. I think it would be better than getting a junkyard one anyway..
