I was doing a brake job yesterday...while i was down there i took a look at my front axle u-joints. They look good, but, i have noticed a "clanging sound" when driving over bumps in the road.

So...i determined the cause of the sound. The driver side axle moves around in side the tube. it will move up and down about a half and inch, seems like it should be firm in that area like the passenger side. The passenger side will move a bit, which I expected, but not as much as the drivers.

Is there some ring that is supposed to support the axle at the end of the tubes?

I check the 4wd hubs, the snap rigs are on the end of the drive spindle are there as they should be.

BTW the 4WD works fine and there are no issues other then the clanging sound over bumps.

there is nothing to support the end of the axle shaft in the tube. on the inside of the spindle, there should be a needle bearing to support the inside of the stub shaft. the only thing that supports the inner shafts, is the carrier in the diff housing. when it is in 4wd does it make any noise? did you check to make sure the u-joints moved easily/ not worn out?

nope doesnt make any weird noises, everything works as it should. The joints are good as well.

Maybe it is that needle bearing...

Sounds to me like the spindle bearing is bad on that side (bearing fell apart at some point). I worked on a Ford with the same issue recently and that's what i found bad.

I have repaired spindle bearings with the exact issue you are having. If they loose the seal they rust up and go bad very quickly. Usually wont make any noise, other than the axle banging around over bumps.

Just make sure you get the spindle bearing kit. It has everything you need: bearing, thrust washer, wiper seal, and spindle seal. They dont cost much. should be able to do it for under $20.00 per side.
Mark the spindle so it goes on in the same position you took it off.
Make sure all the snap rings are off the axle before pulling off the spindle.
Clean everything up good before you put in the new bearings and grease them. I like to use water proof or marine grease.
IIRC. D44 and 10 bolts take the exact same kit.

As Wes pointed out the correct kit number (SBK-1) i'll say that the kits now come with a plastic thrust washer instead of the bronze that was factory and i recommend using yours over again "if" it's the bronze washer.

Scott, isn't the actual SBK-1 kit from Dana/Spicer supplied with the bronze washer? I'm betting they are and all the other parts stores have the plastic ones.

Wes, the parts store ones used to come with the bronze washer and probably for the last 8 years i haven't seen any SBK-1 or SBK-3 kit come with a bronze washer. I'll bet if you bought a Dana/Spicer kit it too would be a plastic washer.
