You can change just the spider gears, which is easier than swapping carriers and ensures you won't change the ring and pinion setup. Make sure you get all of the metal chunks out of there.

Ditto. Just make sure you get all of the old metal out (so as not to take out the carrier bearings or whatnot).....and just swap the spiders. You should be able to find D44 spiders for around $20...and they are very easy to swap in. As others said....its also an easy way to make sure that the ring and pinion are already set.

Swapping in a new carrier would require shimming the bearings to establish both carrier bearing preload and backlash between the ring and pinion. Unless the carrier is damaged it would be much easier to just replace the spider gears.

Pop off the cover and let the fluid drain. Disassemble the hubs and pull the shafts. There is a small (likely allen head) bolt running horzontally through the carrier. Remove that, then remove the center pin (the big shiny one running through the center of the carrier). Then remove and replace the spider gears.

It was cheaper to buy a posi unit than the spider gears when I toasted mine. I had a friend set it up and have a posi!!!

Look in the for sale section on this site. Or go to a local junkyard. D44's are extremely common and you shouldnt have any trouble finding some spiders for it. I wouldnt pay more than about $30 for a good used set.

You either got a hell of a deal on a posi or were being asked to pay an ungodly amount for some simple spider gears. There is no way that a posi should ever cost less than some spiders...unless its free. Heck a lot of people will just give them away. Anyone who installs a locker will have spare spiders just lying around.

its gotta be a 30 spline because i got new axleshafts once
You have to pull the shafts out anyways to take the spiders out, why dont you just count the splines then? Its probably a 30 spline. Once you pull the shafts you will know for sure and just buy the same thing.

okay so i got a d44 housing with 3.73 gears that match the front ones, i poped the dif cover off and it is all good inside, so what will i need to do to take the spiders out?? i pulled the pin out with a pin punch and when i pushed the rod out it hit the ring gear!

so i took out the carrier and i am thinking of just swapping em out.
whats the whole backlash thing??
i dunno whats best,

anybody help!!

You can't just swap carriers without changing ring gears. Since you will have to pull the ring gear anyway just knock out the pin and pull the spiders and thrust washers. If you keep the carrier that is in your axle the shims are already set up for your ring and pinion you just need to put the spiders into your old carrier.

so i pull the carier out from my axle?? wont that mess with the backlash and stuff?

Backlash is set by shims under the carrier bearings. Keep the bearing cups with the bearings that they were used with.
