Obviously this is a hard one without seeing it but after a stop, something in the undercarriage noticeably shifts after I come to a complete stop and it only seems to happen after moving forward, not reversing. I jacked both front sides up and wiggled the wheels, everything seems tight. I even tried putting a jack under the front spring's rear shackle and that seemed tight.
Anyone had this happen?? I'm thinking maybe a worn spring shackle or a bad body mount, but damn it's hard to find. Suggestions??

Re: HELP NEEDED: Something shifts after complete stop

Sounds like the slip joint in the rear driveshaft is binding. Have someone carefully watch under the rig as you come to a stop. The rear end lifts under braking, then will suddenly settle as the weight of the rear coming back down overcomes the binding in the slip joint.

I'm with Harry 100%. I'd even go as far as to tell you to just yank the rear shaft, clean it out REAL good, deburr the inside of the slip on the DS's yoke, clean up the output shaft, grease the slip with some lithium grease, and slap in all back together. PROBLEM SOLVED! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Re: HELP NEEDED: Something shifts after complete stop

You could also check the rear shocks. I had that and ended up with the top mounts loose.

Re: HELP NEEDED: Something shifts after complete stop

i'll 3rd harry's suggestion. i had the same issue and would have never believed that the slip yoke could bind that much. it was almost like someone rearended me a 5mph after i came to a complete stop.

Re: HELP NEEDED: Something shifts after complete stop

Interesting, I never even considered that a possibility. Neatly enough, only 3 months ago I had a new driveshaft made but when I installed it I did not put any lube on the slip joint 'cos I thought it was lubed by the fluid in the t-case. This is not so??

Re: HELP NEEDED: Something shifts after complete stop

So you lubed it and the problem was solved?

Re: HELP NEEDED: Something shifts after complete stop

yes. i pulled the rear shaft...cleaned the shaft and slip yoke and put a light layer of grease on the inside of the slip yoke. problem solved. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Re: HELP NEEDED: Something shifts after complete stop

Re: HELP NEEDED: Something shifts after complete stop

Interesting...thanks for the information /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif. My Suburban has the exact same symptom. First time it happened, I thought someone hit my truck slightly. I got out of the truck at a light, just to check. It does not happen all of the time, usually when cold.

I think I will lube mine this weekend, like Smack, while I am replacing rear shackles.

Re: HELP NEEDED: Something shifts after complete stop

Not sure if mine does the same thing or not but sometimes my 1991 BLZR stock all around makes a firm bump when slowing down from say 5 mph to 0. And then when starting off from 0 to 5. Also seems more likely when very cold. Could it be bad ujoints? Tks,,

Re: HELP NEEDED: Something shifts after complete stop

same thing happened to me, I heard GM makes a lube that resists the tranny fluid from breaking down the grease on the slip yoke!

Re: HELP NEEDED: Something shifts after complete stop

Could you be so kind as to finding out which lube it is?

Re: HELP NEEDED: Something shifts after complete stop

I lube my shaft on a daily basis.

I would if I knew, It cost me $85. at a 4x4 shop just to grease my shaft.I thought my ring and pinion was shot, just ask your local shop, if not contact me and I will find out for you. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Re: HELP NEEDED: Something shifts after complete stop

WELP, I "lubed my shaft" this weekend, I must say it was quite enjoyable!
Anyway, at first I didn't think it worked, but knock on wood, after a bit more driving the problem hasn't returned.
Thanks all!!
And might I add, you should all feel free to thoroughly lube your shafts!

I'm quite sure that Beaver Oil is the preferred lubricant.

Re: HELP NEEDED: Something shifts after complete stop

Could this also cause a "bang" when taking off from a light, or when coasting and then stepping on the accelerator? The guy I bought my truck from says that this happens but I havent experienced it (havent registered the truck yet) so I havent looked into it yet. Any ideas?
