Went out to start the truck this morning and had power until I turned the key and then no power and no start. Tried to jump it to no avail. But when I close the hood the dome light came back on, so I tried to start it again. Still the same thing complete loss of power when I turn the key. Open and close the hood again and the same thing happens, light comes on but lose all power when I turn the key. What is going on here. Already checked all the fuses and am thinking possibly the starter or fusible links are the problem, but not sure what to check first. Thinking the starter maybe because the jolt of closing the hood is making the connection but when I turn the key it shorts out again. Any other ideas?

As Jason says, crappy connections at the battery, + or -, will do that. The domelight pulls very little amperage, so it works, but when you (try and) pull the higher load of the starter, whatever is gooping up the connection heats up and blocks the connection.

I had one where trying to start the truck would kill the connection for an hour or two, but if I left it alone it the dome light would come back on after that. Drove me nuts for two days until I cleaned and tightened the battery studs.

if it's not the battery whichi feel it is check the wires going to the starter. it sounds like an easy fix but it could als become a nightmare

Battery is good, cable connections are good at battery, cables are less than 3 months old. Still no power. The wiring at the starter all looks good, so should I assume it is the starter. None of the connections have any corrosion they are all very clean.

After you tightened the battery connections , jump the solenoid and see if she spins , if she does look at your fusible links .

I had this same problem I would get radio, lights, ect but when I would try and roll it over it would all shut off and nothing. Turned out to be the starter found that out when I tried to start it on the super jump setting on my battery charger and smoke poured out and the starter shot some sparks :eek1:

Thanks guys! It is the starter it wont jump at all, tried an old extra I had lying around and it worked. Now I am going to the parts store to get a good rebuilt one to put on. Thanks again.
