I ran my diesl van out of fuel and after adding fuel it will not start again.

Any tricks?

you've got a job ahead of you. First you have to get fuel flow up to the IP, that means fuel to both fuel filters. If you have an electric lift pump this will be easy, if your mechanical its more challenging. You have to start a siphon feed to the injection pump. Then after both filters are full and you have fuel flow, then you can start cracking nozzle lines loose. Loosen them all up (or however many you can get to), and start cranking until you see fuel weeping out of the connections, then snug them up and you should be able to get it to start trying to run.

BTW If you want to fill the primary (large filter) first with diesel, thats ok, try to use as clean of fuel as you can, but never, EVER fill the secondary filter with diesel out of a can. You will be bypassing all the fine filtration (particles smaller than you can see, <10 micron) And loading that crap into your injection pump.

Oh yea, go easy on your starter, otherwise you'lll fry your starter solenoid....i wouldn't crank longer than 10-12 seconds at a time, then let it cool for a minute.

Hope this helps..

well, i think you're making it sound much more complicated than it is.

step 1: pull the pink wire off of the front of the injection pump (IP)

step 2: remove all your glow plugs (this will help immensly on keeping your starter alive)

step 3: making sure there's fuel in your tank, turn the starter for 15 seconds. wait 2 minutes to let the starter solenoid cool down, do it again. i usually do this 4 times, tho that's usually overkill.

step 4: connect the pink wire again. remove the injection pump lines from each injector

step 5: have a buddy watch for fuel to spray out of the injection lines as you crank the engine over for 15 seconds. it should work on the first or second try. if not, go back to step 1.

step 6: install glow plugs

step 7: hook up fuel lines and start it up.

takes about 15 minutes. no biggie.

DO NOT use starting fluid. Kaboom potential.

If you have a box type fuel filter, they are mounted on pass firewall, you should bleed the air out of it as well. On the top right corner there is a black plastic valve with a nipple to nowhere. Open that valve until fuel comes out. Normally it will squirt out. Then close it.

If you have the round type I don't know the procedure.

I'd try this first. If fuel doesn't come out after a couple of seconds then try ColbyStevens suggestions.

After you get it started and shut off the engine you can do my check again to make sure you don't have an air bubble at the top of your fuel filter. Just need to see a little fuel is all.
