okay so if its not one thing it's another...
first thing first. it's an 81 k5. 350/350/208 setup.

today, I take my truck out to do some "trail driving" you know nothing serious. could probably do most of it in 2wd..
I put my truck in 4 low . I try to go up this hill. and only my rear tires are spinning. my fronts arent locking in. . I look under my truck. and its just pissing tranny fluid out.. it's everywhere.. anyway I spend $7 bux a quart. bought some fluid. and stopped and put some in every little bit.. I had to drive home...
my question is. it looks like it's leaking from adaptor that connects the Tranny/TCase together....
it really doesnt leak when its sitting there. but if i drive it. it just pours out..

also what would be the Part #s for the gaskets.. or can I just make them out of a sheet of cork

edit also I noticed i leaked fluid a bit when I was in 4 low before.. but never thought anything serious of it..
does that just sound like the gaskets or. ?
also my xmember came loose on passenger side and is hanging down..

That's not a Chevy trans. It's a Buick, Olds, Pontiac model. Won't bolt up without an adapter.

Are you looking for a dirt cheap fix, or do you want it to be reliable and last. I would not touch a used trans myself. If yours was working well, you could have someone replace the case for you and reuse most of your internals. My uncle owns a trans shop in Fontana. They do great work and are honest, but they are not the cheapest. You could pull the trans yourself and replace it with a used unit, a rebuilt unit, or replace the case on yours and reinstall. It would save you some money. On the other hand you could have a pro pull and replace it, and they will be responsible to make it work, but you will pay more. Transmissions are quite complex and there are a number of things to watch for while assembling one, and there are also a number of changes you can make when building one to make it live a long time. I will only leave the build up to a trusted professional. I would hate to mess up a trans and have to pull it a second time in a row. Same with engines-I'll pay a pro to do critical internal work.

one other thing-an auto trans can pump the ATF into the transfer case if the seal between them is blown. When this happens the fluid is pushed out of the t-case vent. I'm guessing this isn't the case with yours though. Is the leak from near a fitting on the trans or just on a random part of the case?

where the red line is. theres a crack on the top of that area. when i put it in reverse it just spills out of the top

i know thats not the same tranny. but its in about that area where the crack is.

cracked after the adapter I thought it was just the gasket/seals at first till I pulled my tunnel cover.

also.. could I get a 2wd tranny?

my tranny has an adapter in between the Trans/np208.. not sure if they all have them..

or is it an adapter to make the 2wd work with the 208

They all have adapters between them, and a 2wd trans is (I believe) only going to work with a tailshaft swap on the trans.

2wd transmissions also use a different inspection cover, typically tin on 2wd versus heavier aluminum on 4wd applications with supports for the transfer case. It is possible, I believe, to drill and tap a 2wd housing for the aluminum cover, but it is generally a much better idea to use a 4wd trans.

Either way you are going to need to tear the trans down, but it would be easiest to just pick up a well built t350 to replace what you have, or get a new/used case and transfer your internals over. Since you were loosing fluid, it would be a great time to replace clutches, install a shift kit, and maybe do a few upgrades.

If it were me, and it was my DD, I would call around trans shops and find a newly rebuilt 4x4 unit to swap in. If it was just a weekend warrior type vehicle it wouldn't be a big deal to put in a used trans while you saved up some cash for a new one. But, you need this to remain reliable and I just don't trust buying something used under that circumstance.

well. i cant really afford a "new" tranny. gonna have to get a used one..
its just a pain in the rear to find a tranny that was mated to the np208.. i still havent found one. I called a few trans shops around here. They want $200+ to swap the shafts out..
so...

my question is.. I can get a 350/203 combo with both driveshafts. for ~300.
I have auto locking hubs in the front. and I KNOW I'd have to replace them to use the 203.. idk what to do really. cash is REALLY tight.
