Just rebuilt my trans. and took it for a test drive the other day. It worked fine(1st 2nd 3rd and OD).

On the way back home (from the test drive) I noticed the shifts were a little late, so I thought the tv-cable needed to be adjusted or more fluid. I tried both and no luck.

I Googled this and saw it could be the governor. I took it off and it was bad, so I put in another and thought that I've fixed it. Still nothing. Please help

Fluid level full? Auto transmissions do funny things when they are low on fluid. And you could have filled it when first put in, but once everything fills up, it may need more.

What did you replace? The whole governor or just a new gear on it? Any chance this is a diesel?

I replaced the whole governor, the old one did even move. I had to get a screwdriver to move it. it's a gas 350 tbi

Now why would a governor freeze up - unless your new tranny is making debris? Did you change any parts between model years or do anything interesting during the build? What is the new governor out of?

The fluid was low when I took it for a test drive, so I checked the dipstick and put more in. The fluid level is on ok now

I bought a rebuilt 2wd 700r4(performance HD clutches) which I converted to a 4wd by switching the shafts at the end of the trans.

The guy I bought it from said he was planning to put it into a truck he was building but stopped working on it. I don't know how long the trans. sat during that time, but it was full of new fluid and lube when I opened it up.

The only other thing I can think of is a corvette servo I installed on it.

The governor is out of the previous 700r4 I have.

My guess would be a stuck tv valve. Unhook the tv cable from the carb and grab the end with a pair of pliers, yank it against the stop several times. Reconnect the cable, check adjustment (banjo string tight at wide open throttle) and test drive.

last fall when after i rebuilt my 700r4 i had very similar problems. first few shifts were good then got later and later untill finaly it would not shift out of first. My govonor locked up like your also. What i think the problem ended up being was one of the pistons in the valve body got gauled up and would not move.

Iam not a transmission expert but some things i rember from my research that could also cause a 700 to not shift. out of 1st are:

stuck tv piston
band came off the pin
2-4 servo
there are more but i cant think of them off of the top of my head

My '87 K5 is still in limbo due to lack of finances to renedy the unsyncornized 700R4. I told my buddy it shifted hard into 2nd but was fine after that...he disconnected the TV Cable n I drove off without reconnecting it n it just threw it all outta whack. So its been sitting as I havent been able to afford to bring itto the shop to have it fixed right. Still wondering if I should just haul it in n just get'er done...

Sorry I've been busy lately, but I found the problem. After I replaced the back shaft I put the band in wrong. It wasn't in the pin, and got wasted along with my 2nd gear clutches. I guess i'll be buying a rebuild kit. Thanks for all the help!!

Just came to say band...but, I guess that don't matter.

And,you should really have the ATSG manual,of you're rebuilding ANY transmission.

They have a chart of what causes what.
