I'm trying to swap out the gears in the rear end of my '90 Suburban. It has a 14 bolt 10.5" FF axle. I've got the pinion gear out, the axle shafts out, the carrier bearing caps off, and the carrier spins freely. According to my manual, the carrier should just pull out of the housing, but no such luck. It will move forward ~1/16" then stop, like it is caught on something. I've tried rocking the carrier side to side, but that does not do any good. What am I missing?

Thanks!

Lol, yep. I figured that out right after I posted this. Guess I needed to take a break for a couple minutes. :doah:

Now all I need is something big enough to hold on to the carrier while I take the bolts out. Not to mention the pinion nut. I've been trying to get that thing off all day.

Been trying to get your nut off all day huh. :haha:

A good vice and a 4 foot cheater bar are your friends about now.

My girlfriend has never complained. :pimp:

I've got a vice, now I just need a cheater bar...

My vice is not big enough to hold on to the carrier though... I may have to take the carrier some place that does rear ends and have them put the new ring gear on for me.

If you haven't already, try putting the carrier and pinion back in the housing and take the pinion nut off that way. The housing makes a great holder in this case.

Lol, tried that too. Basically ended up doing pull-ups...

I took the parts to a local 4x4 shop. They rebuilt the pinion and ring gear for me.
