i have a 1996 4 door, 4wd tahoe that has a vortec 5.7l & 4l60e, it started slipping when shifted into 3rd gear, the motor stumbles and sounds like its running out of gas, a new fuel filter is going on tomorrow, but i don't believe it is my problem, because you could pull it down into 2nd, get speed up then shift to overdrive and it would jump 3rd and go on until you have to come to a stop. then you would have to do the same thing again.

it only does this once it reaches full operating temp, the tranny has less than 50,000 miles on a rebuild, so the bands and clutches shouldn't be gone. the fluid looks and smells normal. the truck is street driven only and not driven hard or been used for towing.

But now every gear is gone after 4-5 miles.[truck seems like its reaching operating temp faster than usual] after it stumbles, i can feel trans barely start pulling once you let off of throttle and it falls to idle and just off idle and motor clears up, to much gas and its like neutral, except it doesn't rev it stumbles and bogs and slips the tranny in any gear.

it threw a code, so i had advance auto read the obd2. it reported "manufactur's transmission control" IIRC it was code 8412. they said they had no idea, they have never seen that code and it could be anything from the computer to any trans sensor. so i drove it home at 10 mph on hills about 2mph @ 3000 rpm. seem like converter isn't pumping pressure, but doesn't explain the engine bogging.

has anyone encountered this problem or seen this code? if so what was the fix? please help as this is my only street legal truck at the moment, so its my dd and i'm stranded!

Is there any noise coming from the tranny?
How is the fluid level?
Any sign of leaks underneath?
Any way to buy/borrow a transmission pressure gauge?
50,000 miles on a rebuilt tranny isn't exactly new.
When the problem started did it run fine in every gear except 3rd?

Is there any noise coming from the tranny?a slight clacking sound after you've made it slip and pull the truck, quite upon start only after it warm & you move the truck
How is the fluid level?normal
Any sign of leaks underneath?no leaks
Any way to buy/borrow a transmission pressure gauge? never heard of such, what do you connect it to to get trans pressure
50,000 miles on a rebuilt tranny isn't exactly new. yea, but i've had th350's run 250,000 miles, this supposed to be it's replacement, it should last more than 50,000 i think
When the problem started did it run fine in every gear except 3rd? yep

im pretty sure the 4l60e is a computer controlled trans so that could be your problem. check and see if the converter is getting super hot also. be careful though they can burn the **** out of you quick.

it is a computer control shift, something in trans is getting hot(hence it reaching operating temp in about 1/3 of how it usually warms up) so you saying the computer also?

if the fluid is not getting hot, or the convert isn't boiling then it is computer related. thats bout as much as i can tell you

thanks, guess pulling the innspection cover and drive it around block and see if converter is getting really hot, would that be an indicator of converter going out? i've had a converter go out on me b4 and thats what it feels like to me,
on another note i have a 4l80 not sure but think its an e. its out of a 91 3/4 ton 4x4 suburban(went to sm465), would it work in my 96 and obd2?
mechanic told me that tahoes are notorious for eating front brake pads, rotors and trannys, because these paticular parts were made for regular 1/2 tons, and when they put them in a 7000 lb tahoe, they are working over what they were intended. any truth in this? sounds plausible.
