I am building my 1977 jimmy. So far I have 60 front ( power lock?), 14 ff rear, (Detroit locker). 4.56 gears. 4" spring lift. 36, 16.5 Swampers. Did the sawsall thing. Building a stroker big block. I have a th 350 and 205. My plans are to do the doubler some day. I wheel in mud, snow, some rocks, and is sees some pavement. 20 miles or so to the woods, not a daily driver.

So, what tranny is the best choice?

Thanx for the help......

A TH350 will wear out behind a stock BBC. If you're running something bigger, it will explode. If by "4 speed" you mean the 700R4, a stock one won't hold up either.

The factory put TH400's behind BBC's for a reason. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

You could get a built 700R4 if you wanted the over drive. A well-built TH400 will be stouter, however, prolly less money, and generally bulletproof.

Since you're not driving on the road much, the overdrive doesn't seem like it's worth the extra $$ to me.

Well, I prefer slushboxes, but other people prefer manuals. Your call.

The '465 came behind BBC's factory, so it should be fine.

You can't go wrong with a $100 transmission that will last 300,000 miles. /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

Thanx for your help...I think i may go the TH400 route. And upgrade to the Art Carr valve body...Now i need to sell all my TH 350's and 203's

Everything I have has an SM465 (with the exception of the plow truck). I just like manuals better for some reason. I will admit that having an auto in the mud can be more beneficial in many ways. When I put together a "competetive" mud racer rig, it will have either a 350/205 or 400/205.
