so my truck decided to take a poop and wont start its a 1998 chevy 1/2ton extendad cab with the 305 in it.

im totally clues less to what to do im guessing its wiring but i dont know

im getting spark and i tried putting gas into the tbi so i know its getting fuel but still nothing any help? its a daily driver

Does it turn over, or nothing at all? how about the security light on the dash? We need more info to help.

it will crank but not turn over. and what should i check the security light for?

You said tbi????? Should be a vortec engine.
Instead of dumping gas have you tried starting fluid or carb spray.

Fuel pump maybe???

To see if its on......
And also to see if it will come on. The system might be tripped but the bulb burned out.
If the security system is tripped, it will not start.

If you have spark and fuel, it should at least try unless there is something major wrong in the engine.

Try holding the gas pedal all the way to the floor and cranking it. Do not pump the pedal, just hold it down all the way.
This tells the computer that you think the engine is flooded and it will try to clear the condition.

Plus, how sure are you its getting spark?

i will have to look if the light is on but if the system is tripped what do you do to fix? and why would it trip when it was driving just fine the day before that?

stupid smart computer engines

Hard to say. I'm not familiar with that year model. Don't know if it has the chip in the key or just a resistor.

I think in 98, it was just a resistor.
If so, there is a resistor built into the key that the computer reads the resistance of when you try to crank it.
If the contact in the lock gets dirty, it can misread the resistance and think it is a fake key.

You might take the key out and wipe it down with a wet rag or something, dry it and try again.

These years didn't have resistor keys (afaik, my stamped steel spare key runs it)

When my fuel pump was going out, it would trip the security system thinking the pump was unplugged or whatnot and it was being jumped. The security light would stay on for 10 minutes or so, then shut off and everything would be hunkydory.

hmmm... now i wonder if its my fuel pump tripping it. because my fuel pump went out on me about 2 weeks ago and had to put a new one in
