Guys in the last few weeks and maybe month or so I've had a little air noise (I think) coming from my 350. It's like a Tih Tih Tih Tih Tih kind of sound, thought nothing of it cause my buddies truck kinda does the same thing, well it has gotten louder and more noticeable over the last couple days and this truck is my daily driver so I need to know asap if I should quit driving the truck till its fixed. I took a video and threw it up on YouTube. Please watch it and listen to the sound that I described above and please comment back here on this thread, not on the video. Thanks in advance yall. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=TlJVHUoouxk

Should I be able to feel that? Like if I stick my hand up close to the manifold I should feel air right? Does it sound anything like a loose rocker arm hitting the valve covers or a lifter tapping? That what my buddy just said he thought it sounded like. Geuss Ill wait and see what the rest of the ck5 community has to say.

I guess it would be better to be there to hear it, at least for my ears, to be able to give a better answer.
But I would agree that a similar noise could lead to a loose lifter. Even being very low on oil would make a ticking noise for a while.
I hope for a small, simple to repair exhaust leak.

I'm with you, I hope it's an exhaust leak, to "check" the manifold gaskets and donut gaskets I should just stick my hand near them and feel for air right?

If it's at the doughnut, then you should be able to feel the pulse of the air if you can get your hand close enough without burning it. Or use a spray bottle filled with water. Set it to spray a mist and shoot it toward the suspected area and see if the spray gets pushed away.

Just be very cautious and safe.

I'll give that a try tomorrow, anyone else on here have a different opinion? Also, yall think its ok to keep driving the truck? I can't afford to screw up this motor right now... If I shouldn't drive it I wont, but I need to... Let me know what yall think about that.

Sounds like an exhaust leak to me too..but it could be a lifter or rocker also..they sound much the same..

You could put a little oil down the carb very slowly to make smoke, and watch for any coming out at the head to exhaust manifold or at the donut gasket...if you do that be careful,it can foul the spark plugs or even do some damage if you dump in too much too fast..you could also have someone block off the tail pipe on the side thats noisy if you have dual exhaust, that'll increase the pressure and make it easier to hear..a piece of vacuum hose in your ear makes a good stethascope for finding noises like this..

Ah I was waiting for you to see this thread, you always seem to have a good answer to everything. Don't know what I'd do without the ck5 community helping me out... Anyway yall lets hope this is just an exhaust leak, I'm gonna check it out at lunch tomorrow, gonna pull the valve covers and check for loose rockers and see if I can find any exhaust leaks, since nobody has warned against it, I'm gonna keep driving the truck. I'll let yall know how it pans out and if anyone else has anything to ad please feel free

also pull the valve cover and start it if noise is gone its a rocker hitting

Grab a piece of hose, put one end to your ear and use the other end to listen for the sound in different areas. Move it along the manifold, valve cover and collector gasket. You should be able to pinpoint where the sound is coming from by where it's the loudest.

Just be careful if you use vacuum hose as a stethascope--it has enough carbon in it to be a decent conductor--put it too close to a spark plug or wire and its possible to send the spark right to your eardrum, and believe me,it's not a pleasant experience!..

If your engine has good oil pressure, that is an indication its most likely not a bearing or bottom end problem...

Yah, oil pressure is normal so I don't think that's it, in about 30 minutes though I'll be checking it out, will check for exhaust leaks first and if I can't find any im gonna pull the valve covers and check the rockers.

Well yall I feel like a retard... Checked it out just now and the manifolds were loose. All the manifold bolts were like 1 or 2 turns loose. Geuss when It got real bad last night I jut kinda freaked out a little bit, thanks for the help though.

Well,it's better than it being something bad & expensive!...glad it was a cheap e-z fix..

I tend to freak out when I hear noises in my engines too, because most of the time I dont luck out when it comes to noises..usually it is a rod ready to come through the block, not some "simple fix"...:doah:

I recall having a rocker arm break in two once ,on a 307 I had in a '68 Chevy Caprice wagon I had...heard some disturbing clacking, then a "whack",and then it started skipping like it had a dead cylinder!..

I was about 5 miles from home, and it was almost dark, didn't want to walk home, and had no cash for a tow truck (or cell phone in those days!)...

I decided to drive it home, and it ran like crap, and every so often the push rod would jump up and whack the valve cover..thought I was going to have a heart attack before I made it home..
Felt pretty dumb, and relieved ,to find it was only a rocker arm broken!..
I had some spares ,I put one on,it ran fine again..one of few times I lucked out and it wasn't something "major" requiring engine replacement..
