so today i was coming home from work and almost got home and my truck just died.i tried starting and it fired once for about half a sec. so i got it home and start to dig into it to try to find the problem with it and have had no luck. so i got in it and tryed starting it again and still will turn over but wont start.anybody got any ideas on whats going on with it??

Well, on those old Studebaker trucks, there was always a problem with the coil overheating and going dead........

But, if its a Hudson, then the problem is most likely a bad fuel pump.........

In other words, make and model would help.

But, assuming that you have compression, then check spark, and gas flow.

How you check the gas of course, is again dependent on what truck you have.

However, unless you just filled it up, consider a stuck gas sending unit or gauge that has let you run out.

And if you just filled it up, consider bad gas.......

start with the normal stuff - do you have spark? Fuel?

my guess would be fuel pump related.... carb or TBI ?

If shes got fuel to the carb, im gonna guess your module fried. Bunch of the old guys i knew used to carry spares in the glove boxes, although ive only ever had 1 go bad on me.

yea i think i got the problem pin pointed.. i have never gone under a 1/4 of a tank of gas untill today. so i think i picked up just some old fuel in the bottom of the tank, so i am going to pull the fuel filter and see if thats the case cause when i turn it over i get the old gas smell...

what year is this!!?!?!?!
and how is your fuel delivery set up!?!?!?!

You are always sucking off the bottom of the tank, this is not your problem. If you want some more help, answer some of ^^^ question. :) Thanks

I'm saying its a 1939 Hudson Terraplane pickup. It has all the symptoms, and he has not denied it yet...........

Guys, he has a diesel. They are not carb or TBI. Sheesh.

Oh, wait, what's this?

:D

For real, if you want any help, you need to give us some details, not just "It won't start".

it's a 1977 400sb. its a carb and it has stock fuel system. i got out there today and pulled the fuel filter and checked that and put it back together, still nothing.i am wondering if maybe its the spark, but i checked that as well. when it died on me i drove it 27 mile from work and got just around the corrner of the house before it died on me.when it did died on me it bogged out and shut off. i have opened the choke on it and tryed it that way but nothing again so i am alittle stumped.....

before i start on my way home i put gas into so it cant be i ran out...if i had bad gas i would have got aleast a sputter out of it but i am not even getting that..its a 1977 k5 sb 400

pop your hood... work the throttle by hand.. does it shoot gas into the carb? if yes, you have an ignition problem...

go buy one of these at napa, etc...

report back....

Don't even think you will get a sputter with bad gas.
If the gas is just bad enough, you might get one, but every so often someone at the gas station or the supply company will screw up and you will wind up with a large amount of water.

Trust me, it don't even sputter once the carb gets full of that.

The gadget ryoken suggested is a great spark tester. And is handy to have whenever it dies.
But, if you are in a hurry, you can just pull a sparkplug wire off, insert a screwdriver and let the shank rest close to a grounded metal part while someone cranks it.
If you see a nice fat blue spark, then you probably have a fuel problem.

If its too bright to see the spark, you can always insert a wire into the boot with the other end clipped on to your earlobe........But I really don't recommend it.....

i sometimes wonder why we bother when you guys don't listen and do what you want anyway... :dunno:

I agree. He's not listening and instead is probably wasting time, money, and effort on other odds and ends and is going to make more problems for himself.

I learned a long time ago the proper way to fix a car is to test things first, never spend money on parts, and be sure what you are doing is going to FIX the issue.

no better way to fix something than guess and throw parts at it...

it'll be the ignition module, unless it's something goofy.. but that's not the point.. it's a late 70's carbed SB.. how much easier could it be to diagnose? air, fuel, spark... got gas? got spark?

it somewhat reminds me of a buddy i have who went out and bought a 71 chevelle convertable... cool car, but it is a hotrod.. guy doesn't know d*ck about cars, and has no desire to learn.. things start going wrong with the car here and there and car starts this procession from one gas station to the next for repairs...

car turns into a POS in short order from 1/2ass work... my bud wonders why... i told him "you've got no business owning that car.... it's something that needs the passion and attention of a gearhead.. not someone who just thinks it'd be cool to drive a hotrod"....

I like that Ryoken. I don't see if often with cars, not around here anyway, but with super trick quads that are built by XXX but raced and sh1t talked about by aszhat XXX.
