my transmission went out last week .........well all gears except for 1st and reverse! my new one that i ordeed from jasper will be in monday morning. I just pulled the old one out and pulled the pan and found something interesting that hopefully someone can help me with. the electrical plug on the side of the tranny only has one green wire coming out of it going to the brake pedal switch.(had a thread about this a while back also)

when i pulled the pan i noticed that the black wire (ground , i assume) was cut and grounded to a bolt on the valve body , anyone know why the previous owner may have done this?? also the servo at the rear of the tranny , right in front of the transfer case has a little plastic gear on the shaft that runs of of the trans output shaft , it is shredded and broke in half. Please help me with some info before i install a new one in the morning and screw it up!! my cell number is 803-383-4261 , i can explain it a whole lot better if some of our more knowledgable tranny guys would give me a call. thanks, john thigpen

The little shredded gear is the governor. It controls the shifting. Hate to tell you this but it is probabally the reason why your tranny has only 1 and reverse. usually when the governor shreads and breaks like that you only have 1st and reverse.
It is about a 20.00 part at a tranny shop. If you replace it. Your trans should shift normally.
Not sure about the wire. It would either be the torque convertor lockup( most likely if you traced it to the brake switch)
Or the switch wire for the backup lights.

when it first started not shifting it would allow me to start off in ist gear and manually shift up through the gears , then a few days later 4 days to be exact it got to where i only had 1st and reverse , even if i tried to manually shift through the gears. the one green wire coming out of the plug going to the brake pedal switch , i am positive that it is for the torque converter lockup. i also changed the trans filter last week when it started messing up and there was all kinds of metal and shrapnel in the pan , so i know the trans is toast. my main concern is the black wire that the po cut and grounded to the bolt on the valve body. I know the new trans isnt going to be like that and i dont want to burn the new trans up.

GM set up the convertor lock-up several different ways. IIRC my trans is set-up exactly like you've described and it is factory for an 89 model year. I know the early 700's used the vacuum switch on the firewall. The later 700's had anywhere from 1-3 wires to the wire connector on the driverside of the trans and depending on the mount of wires there were different solenoids used in the valve body.

My guess is that the solenoid was replaced at some point or that the transmission was swapped in from another vehicle and the wiring changed. You see a lot of "universal" replacement solenoids where you splice into the wiring in the trans. If the trans was swapped in, that valve body may not have had all of the same switches as the original, so they wired it up similar to the original.

Lockup was working at some point, right? Make sure it is when you get the new trans or you will lose another one. Of course make sure the TV cable is right, as well.

i was told today from a local trans shop , that the lockup need not even be active and that not hooking any wires to the 4 pin connector would be fine. i am not that knowledgable about transmissions so i am still not sure . I would think the lock up should be hooked up ad working. the po had the one wire from the 4 pin elec plug going to the brake pedal switch , and then the black wire from the tc lockup valve/solenoid cut and grounded to a valve body bolt. I DO NOT CARE TO AND WILL NOT remove the pan and cut any wires inside of the tranny!! so what would the best way to hook this up be??? the tranny shop told me that it was only good to have on a long trip and such for a little extra fuel mileage. I was thinking about running the one wire from the plug to the brake switch and a groung from the ground pin to the chassis. would this work? I really need some input and help with this guys , as I do not want to burn up the 1400.00 trans I put in today!

That really makes me question the shop, the lockup makes a pretty significant impact on both fuel mileage and transmission life, not something worth overlooking because they don't feel like hooking it up because "it's not worth it".

Other than GM remans (and what I've heard on the internet), I've really only heard/seen bad things about shops and rebuilt 700R4's and 4L60E's

I would be looking for a different trans shop.

Those guys are hoping that you don't hook it up and then bring your truck back after the trans is toast so they can "build" it for you IMHO.

ok , so the previous owner had replaced the 4 pin connector with some type of 2 pin connector with one wire removed from it and cut the black wire inside the pan and grounded it to a valve body bolt! the one wire coming out of the connector on the trans runs straight to the brake switch band from the switch to power. how exactly is this supposed to be wired up? I need to know how to do it right , where to run my wires , get my connectors(pictail plug for the 4 pin connection to the transmission). or either the proper way to wire it up through the brake switch. please help me , I installed the tranny myself , but do not know a whole lot about the internal workings of the 700r4 , drawings , wiring diagrams schematics , hell my cell number is 803-383-4261 call me if you can help me please ! I want to do this right as the truck is a daily driver and mostly street driven , please guys , I need your help to walk me through fixing this problem. thanks
