Ok, so my cruise control has always worked, well up until I finally had to tighten my own tilt steering column. I had to drop the column down some in order to fish the turn signal wires up enough to get the switch and the housing over the steering shaft. When I was all done I discovered that my cruise control no longer works. I thought maybe I pinched the wire coming from the set button on the end of the turn signal switch but I have checked it and it is not shorted out and I do get continuity between the wires when I depress the button. I also thought that maybe I accidently knocked a wire loose from the DRAC module but that wasn't the case, I also checked the switch on the brake pedal and that is all looking good and the electrical wiring is still connected and the switch is adjusted properly. Anyone have any other ideas and what/where to check? I've checked every fuse and they're all good as well. :dunno:

Recheck the pinched wires. You may have broken the strands inside without breaking the insualtion. You might have continuity, but not enough voltage to power the module.

I checked for pinched wires but had none. I then checked continuity to make sure the actual button didn't just happen to fail on me.

Isn't Cruise Control also controlled by vacuum? Maybe a vacuum line got ripped or split coming from or going to the canister. Just a thought.

Sorry, misread your post. Trouble with electrics is you have to keep covering the same ground over and over.

Going a little bit beyond what I know for sure, so bear with me. Does this truck have the Emergency flasher button in the column?

A long time ago, I was following someone with a problem. The fastest they could go was about 30, so I was following.
Being the lazy sort, I tinkered with the cruise control until I just matched their speed so I could relax.
Suddenly I realized I needed the flashers on. I reached up and hit the button. Instantly the cruise control dropped out.

That is about all I remember. Don't remember what truck I was in, or even when I happened.
So, I don't know if it applies to your truck. If it does, it gives you another place to look.
Also, if you have not already, check to make sure that the brake lights and both turn signals are working.
Anything you can find that does not work, gives you a place to start looking.

And, if anyone reading this, happens to have a truck like yours and is headed somewhere, how about putting it on cruise and hit the flashers to see what happens?
I know some vehicles will flash on cruise, and some won't.

Snuffy, not a vacuum hose issue as i've checked that they are on and no leaks.

Fordum, yes the e-flasher is in the column but like I said I know exactly when they stopped working and it was just after I dropped the column to give slack in the turn signal wires so I could get the turn signal assembly over the steering shaft. I suppose I could always tear the column back apart just to make sure it's nothing in there BUT EVERYTHING else in the rig works.

Does anyone have a wiring schematic for an 89 blazer cruise control system? I've tried searching and came up empty handed and it's not covered in my Chiltons manual.

All my schematics don't show the cruise. Not sure why.
I know what you mean about exhausting every other idea before doing another teardown.

I'm hoping someone will be able to check on the e-flasher/cruise idea just for future reference.

Why don't you trade it in for a Ford? I've got a cruise control schematic for one of those......:D

Remember the old joke about the guy looking for his keys on the opposite side of the street from where he lost them because the light was better over there?

I'm gonna dig through some more stuff. I may have access to one somewhere.......

OK, here is one from a 97 if I can get it to upload.

Best I can do so far, I'll keep looking.

Thanks Fordum but i'm pretty sure that a 97 is different than an 89 as i'm pretty sure the later ones don't use a vacuum source at all.

Not exactly sure what you mean BUT, the cruise worked right up until I dropped the column down to repair my loose tilt steering.
I was out looking at my 85 and it has a separate feed to the back of speedometer and another to the module on the bottom of the column. not sure how different the 89 is.

Ok, now I understand what you're talking about. My 89 USED to be the same way but I recently installed Autometer gauges and went with an electric speedo now which means I ditched the optic eye that plugged into the back of the factory cable driven speedo. I am now running the DRAC system which uses a reluctor ring on the t-case output shaft and an electric VSS sensor that connectos to the DRAC module. The cruise control worked perfect after I did this swap and only stopped working recently when I had to drop the column like I said. I guess maybe i'll drop the column back down and double or triple check that nothing is pinched, broken or disconnected anywhere that I can see. There could be a problem with the on/off switch for the cruise on the turn signal lever, or it could even be the cruise servo unit itself but without a wiring schematic I have no idea what I need to be looking for as far as power, grounds and whatnot.

Well, picky, picky, picky.....:D

Alright, be that way. Try this one........

Hope it helps. It's 1:30, I have not even taken the trash out tonight, and I have to get up early in the morning.....

That is not really clear. Let me see if this is better.

Yep, thats at least readable. Its an 89 by the way.

Any luck 4X? I have the factory schematics here if you still need them, for my 89. Let me know. Sorry I didn't catch this post until this afternoon.

Very nice K5 by the way....

If this link works, maybe it will help.

Only difference is the speed input to the cruise module via the DRAC vs. the VSS Buffer up to 1990.

Hey, Welcome Back! It has been a few years. I hope all is well.

Now on the topic:
on my '91, there is a cruise control switch that sits just next to the brake light switch and is activated by the brake pedal. The switch has a wire connector (forget if it is 1 or 2 wires) and the vacume dump to deactivate the CC. Just one more item to check.

good luck,

Thanks Dorian, it would be nice though if I knew what test stuff means and also what item i'm supposed to be checking the terminals on.
