Hi - I need to replace my directional lever for 1991 Blazer. The lever is cracked. Although it still functions for directional and wipers, the hi/lo beam function does not work. When I pull the lever in, it is loose, with no tension. I assumed it was because of the plastic crack in the lever housing, so I ordered a new lever. However, when I take the cover off, I cannot see how or where the metal rod that controls the hi/lo is attached to the lever. I can follow the rod all the way down to the switch, which works fine. I have attached pictures of where I am now, including the new lever I have. I would appreciate any help on this, as I am do for state inspection next month. Do I need to order an additional part? It does not look like the new lever alone will correct the problem.

Thanks

I am trying to remember how that lays out, but I can't seem to remember. I think the easiest way would be to grab the rod lower down on the column, then move it to see what moves higher in the column.

The lever itself shouldn't be the cause of the problem you are seeing, since it just presses into the column.

Looking at the pictures, it appears there is a piece broken off that goes between the lever assembly, and the column rod. I think that little round rod that is bent in a semi-square should connect with the switch assembly to be moved when you pull back on the lever. Again, it has been a while since I have been in one, but either the rod is bent, or there is a small plastic piece that goes between that rod and the back of the switch assembly seen in the pics. It is possible that the wiper switch has been replaced, and they either broke or lost the piece the goes there, or it could have broken over time and the pieces just fell out.

The cover that covers the back section on the driverside of the colum is what keeps the rod aligned along with another plastic piece. remove that cover (like you have) and the rod will fall out of the switch.
