So I bought a 14b from a buddy who didnt setup the gears correctly (Was 0 preload on the pinion). They ran it for a while like that. They had welded spiders and I have a yukon locker I was replacing those with so figured it was time to install that and re setup the gears. I have pinion preload set to 15 inch pounds now.

I am having issue getting a god pattern however. I have backlash set at .08 and there is only 1 shim thats .015 on the pinion. It looks like I need to pull the shim out and maybe adjust backlash a little more, or do you think these gears are just toasted? There is only 200 miles on it, but there was a good amount of metal flakes on the magnet. No visible chips on the ring gear or pinion. Here is some pictures.

I'm no expert but it looks like the pinion isn't deep enough to get good contact on the ring gear. Maybe try a .020 shim an see what it does to the pattern.

shims are now .000 (Took them out) and set back lash out a little bit. Think this is about as good as I can get it. damn used gears!

First is too shallow, second is too deep. Used gears are tough to get a pattern on but so far, yours are telling.

Mixing your with a little mineral spirits might help with getting a better read. Likewise, be sure to put some tension on the gears while spinning them.

Drive side in the second photo looks good to me. But, I've always read the coast side is more important on used gears.

I have a dilemma. If I shim the pinion back up the coast side gets really high, without the shim the drive side looks low.

Used gears I pretty much ignore the drive side. Set it up on the coast side
Pics of the coast side please

Thats what I have heard too, but I cant get a pattern on the coast side any lower then it is in the picture above. I have pinion shims at 0 right now so thats as deep as I can get the coast side. I have backlash moved back to .008 and am starting to move the drive side off center. If I center the cost side the drive side will be off the teeth. I think the gears are just messed up.

Ok so the shims are Pulling the pinion in. So it looks Like You Need Something In the middle like a .007 shim and try that. Hopefully you have a 5 and 2 to use. I'm lucky my used gears went much easier. Only had to adjust pinion twice and Backlash 3 times. Locked it down and haven't had a problem. Mine was fromt end As well so wasnt as critical. Get the coast side
Good and lock it down. You are getting there. They may be a lil bad but useable.

Don't set backlash by pattern. Backlash is set with a dial indicator. It needs to he close to run a pattern but not dead on. Your coast pic is too deep put some shims back in. Depends on what you have but shouldn't take a lot to get it back out

I've always adjusted backlash within spec to fine tune pattern. It does make a difference sometimes when they're finicky.

I would go with the second pattern. Yes the drive is a little deep but your not going to get it perfect even with new gears. Maybe run the backlash on the high side so not so deep. When I set up my new gears I tried multiple combanations and still not perfect. It is still alive!
