Hello all

I'm swap'n out my 4:56 for 3:73 in my 1986 m1008

I have the ring and pinion as well as a new carrier for the d60

My question is what will I need as far as the rear?

I know it has the Detroit ...so do I need any shims or anything? Or will it bolt up ok as is?

Also... If anybody has the part numbers or what I need to ask for if anything special other than year and axel description for the bearings and seals etc???

:confused:in short, I just have the R&P for front & rear and d60 carrier, what else do I need to get for the swap?

Thank you for the help!

Hmmm, I thought I herd the Detroit would take the 3.73 ok as is...

Not the case huh?

Otherwise just standard bearings and seals for the correct axel?

Who has the best prices now? eBay or rockauto?

Oh! And won't I also need a full spider gear set up etc for the rear too?

:dunno:

On a FF 14 bolt, the Detroit locker fits inside an open carrier.

The carrier split on the 14 bolt is 4.10 down and 4.56 and up.

Ahhhh

Ok got it!

Well good, at-least I keep the locker.

I assume it should be some what easy to resell the 4:56 gear set.

Do you recommend doing anything else while I'm inside the axels?

Also, best place for parts off eBay?

There are quite a few places to get things from.

If its not a one day thing then check all the bearings and replace as needed.

I would just check everything as you take it apart and fix what needs fixed

Most people are going lower with gears. You might ask around and see if anybody wants to trade the whole axle (minus the locker). You could both get the ratio you want, nobody would have to do a gear setup and all there is to buy is U-bolts and gear oil.

Blue's thinking is right. You're doing the opposite of what most people do, so looking around might save you some time/money.

:doah:

Well, I've already got all the parts except bearings, seals and the rear carrier

...but it'll be a sweet truck IF I ever get it done.

Mods include, FULL interior, fresh coat of paint, new chrome and grill... And best for last... An NV4500 and a banks turbo on the 6.2!!!

All that coupled with the 3.73 gearing... I'm expecting 20 mpg!!!

:woot:

But... I'm still on the hook for an open carrier before I can go forward
