help with HF notcher

does your hole saw fit snug into the guid to the tube? is so then maybe the centering is off a little or loose.

mine does the same thing, im also cutting 1.5" with 1.5". im saving to by a protools notcher /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

The hole saw is not centered on the tube. The saw is too close to the notcher, you can use some washers to move it out until it is centered with the hold down strap/tube. Put the washers between the backing plate and the clamp assembly that holds the tube. There are two bolts that hold the clamp assembly to the backing plate. However, you might need more than two washers to move it out far enough to center it.

This is how I fixed mine...

Yes, HF or other similar notchers (even the more expensive ones) often need a bit of shimming to make them work right. Problem is, any little bit off, even due to "stack" tolerances that are individually within spec, multiplied over the length of the bar, can get it off by 1/8" or more easily. Mine is pretty close but not perfect.

Here is another bit of advice. Cut it first. Figure out where the base of the fish-mouth will be, and add about 1/3 the width of the tube you will be joining. This way the saw only makes half the cut, and you don't wind up with razor edge ears that have to be ground down anyway. Saves the saw which lasts twice as long, and even if it's off a little bit, it doesn't really matter.

Your doing ok, that thing is a POS, but it works. I just use the grinder to clean it up a bit when I'm done cutting...

Russ has it right.....you can't "holesaw" through the middle of a tube!!! /forums/images/graemlins/yikes.gif

It's an end-notcher...if you're trying to notch 2" tube the cutting blade should only have about 3/4" over the tube, and the rest of the blade should be hanging over the edge of the work.

It's amazing that you were able to cut as deep as you did, with that much drag the blade should have been binding up and chattering like crazy!!!!!

What about using a 1 7/16" hole saw? /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif
