I have taken my fuel pump off of my 85' GMC 1/2 ton, Diaphragm type, and when trying to install the new one, the push rod that activates the pump is in the way and looks like it needs to be pushed up for the new pump to go in.

How do I go about moving this pushrod out of the way to get my new pump in!
Thanks alot for the help!!

turn the engine over a little . Use some grease to hold the rod in the block when puting the new pump on.

I have tried that and the rod that I see in there does not seem to move at all when trying to turn the engine over... is this rod supposed to be the same size as a regular pushrod in the engine? this seems to be 1/4" in diameter.

I am just trying to make sure that I am looking at this the right way because I cant seem to have mine move at all. thanks for the reply!

The fuel pump pushrod points down, at about a 45* angle.

There is a bolt hole in the front of the block that you can put a longer bolt through to hold the rod in place. The rod SHOULD slide down aways, until it hits the bolted on fuel pump plate. They can be a bear to move because of oil, I had no problem just using a flat blade screwdriver to pry it back up (it shouldn't take any real force) and then getting the fuel pump lever under it.
