Help with starter!?!?!

I have a 1980 K5 with a goodwrench 350 in it. When I bought it, there was a terrible sound with the starter. You know the old truck sound without shims in it. Well the guy told me he just hadn't crawled under there to put the shims in. Well I decided to and the darn thing was twice as far from the fly wheel as it should be. I know you can put 1/2 shims in to move it closer, but that doesn't move it near far enough. I read somewhere there are 2 different size flywheels. Could I have the wrong starter? If I do how do I get a starter for a goodwrench engine? How do I identify this engine when looking for parts for it? Thanks

Where do ths shims go? I put a new starter on today and didn't use any, but there was a shiny thing about 2-3" long in the box with a hole on each end. Is that it? It does make a little "different" when i start it.

That's one of the shims. They're actually available in different thicknesses, to adjust the clearance between the flywheel ring gear and the starter gear. They mount between the starter and the engine block. Any decent shop manual should have a picture of where and how to measure the clearance.
