I have a 90 k5 with some rust issues in the tail pan area. I plan on installing a new tail pan soon and could use some tips from people that have already replaced there tail pan. I see that it bolts into place and maybe a few welds, but mine is so rusted out I can't get an idea how the tail pan mounts to the truck. Here are some pictures of the under side of my tail pan.

There are a bunch of spot welds through the floor skin at the rear. I used a wire wheel on the floor ribs to find them. The wire wheel would remove the paint from everywhere excpet the spot welds which sit slightly below the surface of the floor. Then I used a 1/4" drill bit and drilled out the spots...

If I remember right there are a couple of bolts at the box corners, and possibly a couple of small welds too.

I'm getting ready to do mine tomorrow.. Blazenfullsize have you worked on yours yet?
Do I need to support the rear tub? My tailpan is pretty much non existant.

This is pretty much a bolt in piece as was said before there is a few spot welds to get on the bed floor but once they are drilled out its a bolt in piece. unless your quarters are mangled as well in my case im changing both quarters as well. everything bolts together and gets spot welds.

they are beadwelded at the bottom of the c-pillar usually in addition to the underside bolts and spotwelds...

the aftermarket version is actually one of the better aftermarket pieces...

pretty certain all the tailpans are the same aftermarket piece, so it really wont matter... other than price.... and iirc, they usually run about $90...

I finally did mine not to long ago and the holes that bolt to the quarters underneath were 5 miles off had to relocate them

Could someone post a link where you can get the tailpan for 90 bucks? Every where I look they are going for 150 before shipping.

they may be 150 everywhere now.. that was what i paid about 5, 6 yrs ago.. i'll take a peak tho...

I'll be replacing my tail pan this winter/spring. Go to http://www.brotherstrucks.com/ Download their catalog, it's on page 59. They have it for about $99.99 plus shipping. everywhere else is $130 and up plus shipping. I plan on ordering mine from brothers. :D

I did, but I ended up using some 2x3 steel tubing. I got the idea from a write up I found in the technical articles area here on CK5. Here's a couple pic's. Before I welded in the new corner posts I reinforced them with some 2x2 tubing coming up off the main tube also.

Here I am flexed out pretty good. I totally forgot to roll down my back window because I had plexiglass back there for 5 years. I couldn't even open my door, it didn't phase the back end one bit. The Jeep has 35's and I'm on 33" tires.

That looks pretty good. I didn't measure my old tail pan (or whats left of it) but did the 2x3 work pretty good? I guess you welded it in there? And the tailgate hinges?

Seems like it'd defintely be stronger... Did you buy the replacement panels to go across the back?

I'll search for that write-up... thanks.

The 2x3 fit perfectly. It's welded on the ends only because the quarters were too far gone to reuse the bolt holes. The body mount pieces are 2x2 tubing welded to the 2x3 tube.

I welded in 1/2" plate to space the tailgate hinges down so the tailgate lined up right.

I ordered pickup bed patch panels from classic industries. They were much cheaper than the blazer panels. I only used like 8" of the panels to cover the floor back up.

I also took an old bed frame rail and welded it under the back edge of the factory floor to add some strength to it before I welded in the new panels.

I also had to fix the left rear body mount hole in the frame. I used 1/4" plate for it and drilled the hole in it.
