Help

Just a thought, u said dual 20 gal tanks. Possible the tank switching valve is not letting proper fuel flow to pump. Just enough to fill carb and run for a couple of minutes but not keep up.
I would get an inline fuel pressure gauge and verify proper pressure like was suggested earlier in the post and see if you maintain fuel pressure just before it quits.

dual tanks are the debil....

:haha: sorry had too... getting rid of mine ASAP.. it's cool, but more fail points than I like to see...

I have by passed the switch right now as I have dropped the passenger side tank to fix rust and paint and put in a new sending unit the switch is on my replace list as well

There is gas definitely going in the Carb when the throttle is hit and it still sounds like its backfiring through the carb

Well if your sure its not fuel its ignition related. Coil, module, connections, cracked cap/ rotor. Possible jumped time but slim. Process of elimination.

Coils generally fail when hot, modules just give it up usually. They are about 30 bucks each. I carry a spare of each in the console.

I've seen the modules also get hot/crack issues before... usually it lasts a couple days than sh*t's the bed..

Hear ya, Id get them both and change 1 at a time module first just to know. Ill bet on the module too.

well, even if either ain't it, CK5 bylaws dictate ya gotta keep a spare module and fuel pump relay in the console anyway... ;)

The module will have to wait on payday but I got an extra coil I can try. Ill post back up after I switch and try may be a couple days cause of work but thanks for all the input

A question I have out of ignorance would be since the truck sat for about 3 months while I worked on the fuel system and then me taking it out and running it would that be a reason this happened or it it because I threw the belts or a combo of the two. ( while it sat for those 3 months there was no gas on it at all and I put fresh gas in it when I did start it )

Throwing belts after a year is odd to me unless they were loose or you have an alignment issue with pulleys. Incorrect top alternator bracket can cause this, been there. Said u went wheeling with it, maybe mud in pulleys but doubt it. By the way there are 2 coils that will fit, I believe the one with a yellow wire is correct for a 79 but don't want to steer u wrong.
I believe the coils changed in 81 with ESC and the modules changed to a 5 prong instead of 4, little trivia.

Well with work and baby and poor weather in east TN I just now had time to work on my truck.
Changed coil and module and I did get a change but still not running.
The truck is now firing but all I get is a flame and some smoke from the carb then its back to cranking.
A couple of times it tried to stay running but it just stumbled and died after about 3-5 seconds, hitting the throttle did nothing.
I did pull the distributor to change the module. I also pulled my plugs and wires to check them, they are fine.

And a question I believe I know the answer too, I do not have the power steering belt on right now. I only have the alternator belt on would does that make any difference
thanks for the help so far

I also noticed I had a bolt on the intake that seemed to have oil coming out around it and pooling next to the area where the Carb is mounted

Verify your timing, jumped time, firing order, dizzy 180 out, do a compression test, see if u have good valve movement while cranking. Try diff carb if u have one.

That's all i got.

Sounds like the dizzy is off. If all you get is backfiring through the carb, then its 180 degrees out.
If it tries to run, then its either a tooth off, or you have plug wires on wrong.

It will crank and run with no belts at all, just not long due to overheating.

Its been a bit since I posted but with work and family my time has been limited so no point in posting when I haven't worked on the truck.
so yesterday I finally got to do some work on it. We set the truck to TDC got it started and was able to get it in time then the truck died again and would not restart. same symptoms as before with the backfire through the carb. I ran a compression test and had an issue in cylinder 6 the pressure went up to 90 then immediately fell back down to close to 0 we ran it 3 times to make sure it was consistent. We then put a little gear oil in the cylinder and ran the test 2 more times with the same results. There is no coolant in the oil or oil in the coolant.
thanks for the help guys
