This weekend I replaced the oil pan, gasket, oil filter and adapter for the oil cooler. Everything was torqued to spec so I was sure there would be no problems. Had to drop the starter but I put it back just the way I found it, shims and all. Did a lot of cleaning while I was under there as well. SO...After everything was all buttoned up and oil topped off, I started her up. I was terrified to hear a horrific sqealing noise while the motor was craning that increased in speed until the motor started then it STOPPED. I shut it off and tried again. SAME thing. It sounds bad. To make it worse, the oil leak that I was trying to eliminate is still there. Looks like the rear main seal.

Does anyone have any advice? Im stumped

Please help.

Sounds like a starter issue, try the starter without the shims and see what happens. It is rare that you need to shim a starter.

i had that problem, that was the sound that the starter was about to die. i usually had to replace my k5's starter within a week of hearing that noise.
