Ok guys like an hour ago my buddy bought an 86 k5 with a 305 and 465. It ran great last week when we looked at it. I'm at work, he's stuck on the side of the road on his way home with it. He says he was going up a hill and it died, now it turns over but won't start, he says the choke light is on. I'm going there in 30 mins to help him when I get off work, I need you guys to give me ideas because I want to be able to get it back in the road as quick as possible and I'm not about to burn up my tranny towing him home. Thank yall so much.

Pink wire going from distributer to ecm behind glovebox has no power when trying to start. Thinking this is the problem. Anyway to temporarily bypass it to get the truck running

He could jump the HEI to the junction block near the brake booster ,where the red wires join, and there is a fusible link--that stays hot all the time,so you'd have to pull the jumper off to kill the engine once its started..

If I remember right some years had the electric choke wired in with the oil pressure sending unit, and if it lost oil pressure,or the sender failed, the sender cut power to the choke and it will close up and flood it,causing it to stall..so you may have to wire the choke open..

Choke was open. We assume the ECM needs to be replaced and my buddy decided to have the truck towed home. So. Where shall we go from here? Go on and replace that ecm or is there something else?

There is an ECM fuse, did you check it?..

The ECM usually doesn't die suddenly...more likely there is no power getting to the HEI from the ignition due to a bad wire,(pinched somewhere,or broken strands inside ,all corroded,etc)--or the ignition switch maybe..(they dont go bad too often either)..

We checked all the fuses in the fusebox on driver side of firewall. Where is this ECM fuse. Sorry for my ignorance, I ain't used to havin them cumpooter things to deal with. Both my trucks are pre1980.
