What trans are you guys using? For what I paid for to put a new engine in my wifes truck a few years back I could have bought the Detroit and still had money left over for fabbed parts to install it. So now I'm researching to put a DD in the wifes truck, but instead of adapting my current Ranger/465 behind it, I want to use a big truck trans like a 10 speed. What do you guys think?

That is a pretty vague question. What Detroit are you planning on using?

there was a video floating around the net of a guy who shoved i believe a 10spd in his crew cab...no clutch brake either if i remember right... cant remember how it was split or anything either.. anyways... haha

I don't know, but check out this truck I photographed at a local car show:

The 4-53 seems to be the popular swap, but I have seen the 3-53 and I'm wondering if the 6v- would have a short enough length to fit between the rad and firewall. Most likely I'll be doing a 4-53 just because I can find enough build threads to help me along the way:D

I've got a pretty good setup with my SBC, but the sound of a Detriot is awesome. I dont know, maybe I'll just buy a C-60/70 and adapt the Burb body to it and run a standard 5-speed with 2spd rear. Those seem to be in ready supply around here for cheap.

I did poke around on google earlier today and found that Eaton-Fuller makes a reg 6-speed that doesnt require double clutching to drive. I didnt get the model number but it was the only manual trans for medium duty trucks. I'd have to shorten up the shifter though as its like 3 feet long, bit too long to be inside a regular truck and still be comfortable.

I'll dig a little on eGhey tonight. A 10-spd I found earlier was only $1200, but it has to be shipped truck freight. I'm finding 3/4-53 Detriots for less than $1k used but mostly complete.

I know someone who has a '79 F350 service truck that has a 4-53T with a Clark 5 speed trans and a Brownie box behind the trans. It seems to do pretty well. Last time I talked to the guy though, he was in the process of adapting a NV4500 behind the engine. Its been a few years since I talked to the guy so I am not sure how the project turned out.
