hey everyone

heck, this site is so great, that you guys pretty much should have a fan club! LOL! my GTi was an 84, had about 123,000 miles on it when my uncle sold it to my mom. its weird when the guy hasn't driven it for over 3 years. my gosh, when i think about all of the thousands of dollars my mom has spent on that car... its a nice car and gets good gas mileage, i already have someone who would buy it from me simply b/c it gets good mpg's. but its kinda sitting at the shop waiting for the last couple of hundred dollars to be payed for the engine swap. i kinda warped(melted) a head gasket doing 85 mph on the freeway. it was about 102 degrees and some how my coolant hose popped off the front of the engine, so any fluids going into the engine to cool it off, kinda splled to the freeway.

i pull onto the off ramp cuz i wanna get off. this hole time im heading towards a ralphs to setup a job interview. reach the stop sign, and the car starts to flutter. i know this isnt good so i try to keep it alive. doesnt work, she starts smokin! thank goodness for cell phones, call someone to come help me push the car. that night i pull some new fluids in it, and watch it quickly spew out the gap in front of my engine onto the gas stations asphault. o well. so now that car is in the shop. and probably will be for a few more months. luckily we go to that guy enough that he understands our situation. i do miss that car...

aww s**t, gotta go meet my friends for some bike riding. i love riding my mountain bike, in the hills and hittin trails. thanx man, i got some more stuff i would to talk to you about, so ill probably send an pm to ya. L8!

why do you only use your 4wd for parking lot maneunvers?

I used to have an 84 GTI too. And yes I miss that little car. The only problem was I could not keep a trans mount in it for more then a few months. I guess 6500 rpm flat shifting had a little to do with it.

If I ever am in the market for gas milage I would not hesitate to buy another one.
At the present time my 89 Jimmy is stock except for the exhaust. In the next few weeks I should have all my parts for the 1 ton conversion. I paid $3500 for it in April and I have that much $$ in parts to do the conversion.

ahaha Wayne! Yeah I had that problem too. At least it was the easy one to change. After about #6 I had a machine shop make a aluminum puck to repalce it. Never broke that

This is truly a great site! I found this only a few weeks ago but I was hooked by the time I entered this site. Now I only wish I could get rid of that f****g T@y@ta passenger car that I bought 'cause there wasn't any diesel K5s for sale at the moment I sold my K1500.I just loved that truck but mileage was so bad that I had to sell it:(. Well, soon I will be driving K5,thats for sure. And what' best,my girlfriend likes those trucks too:).

Welcome!! You just hit the jackpot as far as a knowledge site goes. I am older than dirt, and every time I get on, I learn something new. It isn't that I haven't turned any of those things called bolts, and trouble shot difficult problems on nearly every kind of motor, as that is how I make my $. Good luck in getting a K5, and then find a good paying job as someone else posted, cause you will find something else to do to it each day. Good Luck!!

k5woody I Don't Understand The Jeep Thing Either!!!

hey, thats cool man. i know that one day i definitely want to be riding in a K5. my girlfriend likes them a lot too. lots of room.... yeah, with current gas prices, i was at one time wishing i had a car that ran on diesel fuel. but luckily now local gas prices for me have dropped from 1.89 to as high as 1.96, down to a god send of around about 1.45 for the cheap stuff. but with most vehicles you really dont need 90+ octane fuel for your cars optimum performance. the main difference between regular and "premium" octane is that the premium has better additives in it, and has the higher octane level. meaning that more of the gas will actually ignite in the combustion chamber. usually giving a fuller burst of energy pumping the pistons. but if your car really doesnnt need it, why pay the extra few cents for it? Here lowest octane is 95,and gallon of that costs about 3.76,so no wonder why I don't want K5 with gasser.

That sure makes us feel better about what we are paying here in the states! But there are those of us that would love to be able to get 95oct. We would be decking blocks and shaving heads like you wouldn't believe

.
Our highest is 93. You can finds some higher but it's hard.

Welcome to CK5 Bryan!

I bought my Jimmy in 93 and the night I bought it, I had it buried at the local wheelin spot. I was in so deep that I had water inside!

Man, you think you are addicted now, wait until you get the K5!

I always wanted a Chevy pickup since my dad drove one when I was a kid (some crying and soft violin music, please), and was set on buying a pickup. Then I saw an '83 Jimmy for sale on the side of the road, and here I am.

I went the beater route, because I wanted it to be a real project - the body was pretty solid, and it was a pretty good base truck, but it was $800 for a reason... Just reading the posts here has answered almost every question I've had before I had to ask. Without the folks here, my Jimmy would be a rotting hulk in the yard, but it is a fully functional 4x4, with an '83 Blazer sitting next to it, soon to be a fully off-road vehicle. Therein lies the biggest problem for the K5 addict...can you own just one??

Enjoy your addiction, find a K5, and remember, never, NEVER, use baby oil in a transfer case.

<font color=red>"Oil? That's not my oil...that was there before" </font color=red>

Just one K5? um nope! I have two right now and I'm picking up a third one next week! The latest addition is a 74 full convertable project.

My first K5 was a 77 i picked up for $500...a much better deal than i thought at the time. It had very little rust and ran very good. I wheeled it here and there, mostly mud. I broke a few small things and then sold it like a dummy for $1000 6 months later.

ahhh! im just sittin here tryin to take it all in now. my cleric vision was of owning one K5. to spend every night going without sleep to work on my K5 bringing it closer to its never reachable "completion." but now you guys are clouding my mind with the ownership of not one, but two and even three. ahh! ts just so much! hehe. let me get myself started off right by ownig my first, then after a while(4 score and 7 years later, i hope it wouldnt take that long, just seemed funny) ill try to take on another K5 to had to the eer growing population.

and yes mud-weiser, K5's are taking over the world, not just one wheel, but one victim at a time. with its ever growing addiction to work harder on it every chance you get. we, the only to be said is Rock but dont Roll your K5! L8!

I bought my 85 Jimmy in August of 1993. I was only the second owner. The previous owner bought it new and used it to pull a boat, but never had it off-road. It was in pretty good shape.

I took it with me for my senior year at college (UT-Austin) and man was it a party mobile and a babe magnet! I even remember the first time I got "stuck"! I had been out partying with some guys and we decided to drive down this slope from the aprking lot instead of driving out the regular exits. No big deal, right? Well, wouldn't have been a problem if I had realized there was a 3 foot concrete retaining wall at the bottom of the slope! Clunk! The front tires went off and were spinning in the air as I was sitting on the frame on the concrete wall!! After getting out and analyzing the situation, I decided to keep driving straight off it. I did. I bent the t-case support member back about 30 degrees and dimpled the frame rails where it boltes on, but that was the only damage. Oh yeah, and I took out a chunk of the concrete wall. I bent the cross member back, but it still has a distinct tilt to it today!

That's the closest I have ever been to stuck! Well, except the time I was in mud half way up the fenders. Damn ruts! Had to get a Caterpillar tractor to pull me out of that one. That is the ONLY time my truck hasn't gotten out under its own power (or by the power of gravity). Of course, that is so far!

Be smart when you get your K5 and budget yourself ahead of time. There's lots of things you can spend your money on, but do it right. Spending money in the wrong places first can give you a good looking trail rig that can't climb any trails! Be smart. And never be afraid to ask a question here!

thanx for the advice Brian. hey, i have that name too, just spelled differently. damn irish, damn americans! if you understand, you know a lot about names and there origin. so anyways, yeah. budgeting ahead of time would be a good thing for me to do, thanx. since i wont be hitting any seriously tough trails til maybe november if it rains, what do you think the first area of improvement should be? ive always thought that improving my drivetrain would be the best and longest lasting improement, if done wisely. like, putting in 3/4 ton axles, improving the brething of the engine(intake/exhaust), of course disc brakes all around. anything else i should do before reaching for the sky with lifts and tires? o, yeah. of course i should obtain my K5 first. any advice from anyone is well apreciated. thanx, L8!
