Alright so here is my gas tank. Question is how do I lower it? How is an ORD 1" body lift and new bodymounts gonna effect it? and no I really have no idea how big it is I always just put $20 cause I drive about 1.5 miles a day...

There are 4 of these thingys on the bottom that look suspiciously spaced similiarly to the four cariage bolts in the bed... nah...

Definately an aftermarket tank. I think Greg had one of those at one point but never got around to installing it before he sold it. I want to say it was like 37 gallons or something stupid like that. Northwest Metal Products i believe is the maker of that tank.

Here is a link to the website. http://www.nwmp.com/index.asp

CB,

Are you hoping to raise the tank for clearance when you do the body lift, or are you trying to drop it out completely (to install a smaller one, or get to the shackleflip bolts?)

It definitely looks aftermarket and has a similar shape to the NWMP one I used to have, but it doesn't seem to be that specific brand.

If it's bolted into the bed sheetmetal (which it appears to be) the biggest problem you'll have is that the notch in the tank is already hitting the rearmost frame crossmember. When you do the body lift, the tank won't be able to go any higher.

The solutions are to either space down the tank from the body (using 1" spacers and longer attachment bolts) or remove the stock rear crossmember and either notch and reinforce the one that's there, or build a new one out of some round tubing that would provide the necessary clearance.

I can't really tell if there are re-inforcing plates being used in the existing tank mounts, but I am not really comfortable hanging that much weight from the sheetmetal floorpan. If it's a 35 gallon tank, that's about 250 Lbs of weight pulling on those bolts... if it were my truck, I'd try to come up with a mounting scheme with some tabs that rested the weight on the top of the adjacent framerails.

Tank Tank no Tank

Alright so given that I have the metal-fabbing skills of a 6 year-old girl... I see 2 possible paths.

1) Leave it alone, the big tank stays, and forget about body lifts and shackle flips and go with 6-8" spring only.

2) Get rid of it and buy a new tank and or fuel cell and do all the ORD 1" body lift, and shackle flipping with 2"-4" springs...

Remember I have zero extra time, it took me 1 1/2 years to drop a crate motor in...

I'm not sure why keeping the tank requires you to do the larger lift springs....?? :dunno:

Sure it would be nice to take advantage of 1" of extra clearance under that tank by raising it (assuming you added the body lift) but it's not a requirement.

You could do the body lift / shackleflip combo with the existing tank now.....then later, either have someone help you fabricate a new rear crossmember to swap in (allowing you to raise that tank by 1") or get a lower profile tank that would sit higher and tighter than your current one.

Also, get your daughter to help you again....that might speed things up! :D

Supposed to go to the shop and have the rollcage installed ASAP. Kind of need to figure out what to do about body lift before I have the cage put in and tie it into frame...

Without the cage all the other goodies are on hold. ie. rhinolining, suspension seats(i need seats bad), autometer, etc etc

I am tempted to put a new tank in it and install body lift that is sitting here ready to go. LMC has a tank kit for 200 or Summit has a couple aluminum fuel cells for less than 300. Put something in there install bushings and body lift and start phase one on the cage.

As far as my daughter, the 6 year old is a brease and easily fooled, she thinks Home Depot is a Chzekoslovakian phrase for "No Mom we didn't have Ice-Cream why would you think we had Ice Cream...". The 1 year old is the real pain, she pinches hard and caring her in the Baby Bjorn is not so fun while trying to wrench... she probably fit in the tank... I overnite it to you Greg and you and the wife keep it for the summer...??? The dog gets a pinch...

BA Tank for Sale

You could be the proud owner of the very tank discussed here in this thread.

Sold!!!

CDA 455 said he's gonna do a thread complete with video of the new tank install. I can't wait!

What am I gonna put in a fuel cell or a stock replacement tank?

I got all my cage goodies from DIY4X today, Staked Cage Thingys and a couple bages full of Gussets, Thanks Kert!!! Oh and a Hoodie that my wife stold and I had to stand in one spot with my boot on a sticker for 5 minutes till the kids started in on the shredded paper.

The cage is gonna happen soon as I get passed this.

CB, what's the end result your working toward here?

Bigger tire fitment, wheeling clearance, simply cleaning thing's up?

If your going to wheel, loose the tank or definitely plate under it.
Loose it altogether if your looking for departure clearance.

Why the body lift?
You mention it a few times, needing new mounts or just trying to gain the room?

If your thinking of ever going to fuel injection, now might be the time to do the in-tank pump set up, sounds like maybe. :smirk:

Sounds like your heading towards wheeling with the cage/lift thing, yes?

I vote fuel cell, one of the best mods I've ever done to my blazer.

A factory tank hangs 7.5"s below the frame rails, this fuel cell only hangs 3.5"s below and made a big difference for wheeling.

What I want

What I want is a safe reliable and capable rig to take the family wheeling, take me to work, and use for chores like dump run, pull logs, etc.

I wanna end up with 6-8" lift, 37-39" tires, 1 tons, full cage, 4 suspension seats. eventually i want to go with a 465 205... that's the dream right there.

What I have, nice 72 original paint damn little rust, 4" rough country, horrible lift, 33" TSLs, missing sun visor, crappy original seats with no vinyl left, but a GM HO 350 crate motor with about 150 miles on it and all new acessories. New body bushings and 1" lift from ORD, staked cage ends and gussets from Kert @ DIY, 12 pt cage from SW Race Cars with an extra main hoop, and an appointment to have a shop do the install and a bunch of mods...

Fuel Cell sounds like the way to go, my only hesitation is getting it installed seems a little more envolved than a stock tank.

VT what cell is that and what are the demensions???

X2. I've got a 37 gal aftermarket tank that's all boogered up and might need to come out. It's hanging down a little low, just above the bottom line of the 12 bolt's pumpkin.

Mines only 18 gallons, I was going for ground clearance when I gave the guy my input more the maximum capacity.

He built it exactly as I asked, I'm sure adding a couple gallons woudn't be an issue.

I'll gather up his info and report back. :wink1:
