lol. well first of all My truck Starts up!... well kinda anyway.

My edelbrock carb I have. doesn't have a choke butterfly on it. 600cfm 1406#? IIRC. But anyway. its real hard to start. (ofcourse.. no choke).. anyway. my main question is it spits gas out of the choke area? sputters. or w/e. This carb has done it in the past. on my old motor. so.. is it time for a new carb?

also. I have a clutch fan setup for cooling. and my fan doesn't look like it spins very fast.. I can stop the fan from spinning with a rag. and spin the fan backwards... i know that cant be very good.. is my fan bad or is that normal..

The fan clutch isn't supposed to lock up "solid" ,it''l always have some slippage, but when the engine is hot enough the fan should be spinning at a good clip at idle--its intended to let the fan freewheel at highway speeds to lessen drag and the HP it uses...main thing to watch for is and play from side to side ,which means the bearing is going out in it...

The carb might need an accelerator pump if it spits back only during acceleration,or maybe its accelerator pump linkage adjusted..it could be a float problem causing flooding, too much fuel pump pressure,etc..

I'm not sure if the missing choke butterfly might affect its operation or not, without a choke it will want to spit back or backfire when cold until the engine warms up good in cold weather of course, thats normal..once it warmed up it shouldn't though...

The fan should freewheel pretty good when the radiator is cold. But, once its hot, you should be able to give it a spin with the engine off and not get more than a 1/4 turn or so out of it.

Examine the shaft area of the clutch and the front if it has the little coil spring sensor on front.
If you see any oily stains no matter how small, its toast or about to be. It only has about two ounces of fluid in there and it needs every drop.

Once one of the seals starts leaking, its gone.

Also, any wiggle from side to side where the shaft goes in is bad.

alright. Ill check that tomorrow. and about the carb. it's been spitting back at me since my old block. only happens from idle to acceleration ... stop sign red light.. etc..

and the truck doesnt want to idle when its cold. because of the no butterfly. so.. I think i probably Should get a new carb anyway.
But what carbs can I get? I have an edelbrock Performer manifold on i was talking to someone at a parts store. and they said a Quadrajet would probably be good i have no clue the differences etc.. but. the truck is a DD. with little offroad. some dirt. hills no major rock crawling or anything

The no idle at cold is only distantly related to the missing butterfly. The butterfly choke helps it to crank, and helps some at idle, but the choke also has the fast idle cam on the side of the carb to keep the truck idling faster until it warms up. Its probably gone too.

The spitting back when you accelerate is most likely a bad accelerator pump in the carb.
You can usually replace them with the carb still on the truck.

As for what carb, I have no idea. I have not fooled with them seriously for years. I have one on my 1966 F650, but its stock, and I have no plans to modify it.

You might consider going Fuel injected. Several people here have switched.

but fuel injected is expensive to switch to, no? and you need a PCM?

okay update. fresh fluid change. every fluid in the truck, (minus gas sitting on empty)
the truck starts up after 20 minutes of trying to start it

sounds great when it stays started. so I think all I need is a new carb. might as well go new than rebuild this one. had problems with it ever since I had the truck!
